South Africa’s misery in the World Cup 2019 continued as they suffered a 6-wicket defeat against India in Southampton. The Proteas now has suffered their 3rd successive defeat in this tournament as they failed to chase 300+ in the previous two fixtures. On a seaming wicket, the South Africans were restricted to 227/9 by a collective bowling performance by Indian bowlers. India took 47.3 overs to reach the target in the tricky conditions to bat as Rohit Sharma guided his team with an unbeaten 122.

South Africa’s losing streak continues:

4South Africa has lost each of their last four World Cup matches including three in this edition. The Proteas had not lost more than two games in a succession in World Cups before this streak. In fact, they never lost their first two matches of a World Cup in the previous seven editions.


6 – India won each of their last six meetings in the ICC events against South Africa. They got the better of the Saffers in the World Cups (2015 and 2019), in WT20s (2012 and 2014) and in the Champions Trophy (2013 and 2017) over the last eight years.


Chahal runs through Saffers:

4/51Yuzvendra Chahal became only the 3rd Indian to bag a 4-wicket haul on World Cup debut. Debasis Mohanty took 4/56 against Kenya in the 1999 edition while Mohammed Shami had figures of 4/35 against Pakistan in 2015.


A big knock from Rohit:

122* – Rohit Sharma’s unbeaten 122 in this game is the 2nd highest individual score by an Indian in a World Cup chase. Sachin Tendulkar’s unbeaten 127 against Kenya in the 1996 World Cup is the highest score by any Indian in a CWC chase.


3Rohit Sharma became only the 3rd player to score a century in an IND-SA World Cup game. Sachin Tendulkar (111) and Shikhar Dhawan (137) scored centuries for India in 2011 and 2015 respectively.

Rohit is also the first to score a hundred in an IND-SA World Cup game while chasing. South Africa chased in the previous four meetings in the World Cup with India.


100% win record for India:

15 – India won each and every World Cup game while chasing a target of 230 and lower. They successfully chased a target of 230 and less in CWC on 15 instances; with at least four wickets to spare every time.


A game of milestone for Rohit:

8096 – Rohit Sharma completed 8000 runs as an opener in International cricket. He is the 7th Indian to score 8000 International runs as an opener and his average of 49.36 is the best among the seven.


12048 – Rohit Sharma became the 9th player to amass 12000 and more runs in International cricket for India. He needed 74 runs for this milestone coming into this game.


A first in the World Cup:

1 – South Africa innings is the first in the World Cups where No.7, No.8 and No.9 scored 30+ in the same innings. Andile Phehlukwayo (34), Chris Morris (42) and Kagiso Rabada (31) scored 30+ batting at No.7, 8 and 9. Overall, this is the 10th instance of No.7-9 scoring 30+ in the same ODI innings.


Kohli gets to 50:

50 – This was Virat Kohli’s 50th win as captain in the ODI cricket which came in the 69th game. Only Clive Lloyd (63), Ricky Ponting (63) and Hansie Cronje (68) needed fewer games to reach the 50th ODI win as captain than Kohli.
