Indian team wanted to win WWC for Jhulan and Mithali: Poonam Yadav
Poonam was delighted to see the large gathering of the crowd at the airport, waiting to receive the women cricketers.
“So near yet so far”- this phrase is perfect to describe the condition of the Indian Women’s team. On Sunday, at the iconic Lord’s Cricket Ground, India and history were separated by a hair’s width. The supremely talented bunch of young female cricketers, under the crucial guidance of experienced cricketers like skipper Mithali Raj and pacer Jhuulan Goswami, became the runners up of the greatest event in Women’s cricket.
Hosts England, under the supervision of skipper Heather Knight, got the better of the Women in Blue. However, with unimaginably good performances, the female cricketers of India have made a name for themselves. One such cricketer among them is Poonam Yadav. The spinner was surprised to see the kind of reception that was laid on the team’s platter at the Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport in Mumbai on Wednesday.
The World Cup is past now and the eves are looking forward to shaping the future. Unfortunately, Mithali and Jhulan Goswami may not be a part of the team in the long run. The probability of seeing these two playing in the blue jersey in the next World Cup is very very slim. The likes of Gautam Gambhir and MS Dhoni managed to present Sachin Tendulkar the prestigious trophy, but Poonam and Harmanpreet failed to replicate that.
“Both Mithali and Jhulan are legends. They made very important contributions to the team. We wanted to win the World Cup for them. We tried our level best. They both helped us a lot and that’s why we ended up being the runners-up in the tournament,” said Poonam while speaking to ANI news.
” We played really well during this World Cup. Our performance was consistent throughout the tournament. Our performance was not dependent on any particular individual. It was a complete team performance. I think this performance will really boost the girls in the future. We just couldn’t win the World Cup. It doesn’t matter,” she further added.
People have started knowing the female cricketers
While on one hand, Poonam was sad for not being able to give a suitable farewell to the Raj and Goswami, she was delighted to see the large gathering at the airport on the other. “I think earlier, no one even used to watch women’s cricket. But now, people have come to know us. And the reception that we received today was just amazing. And we think that people have started knowing us,” she concluded.
