India’s Flop ODI XI of the decade

The 2010s decade will end soon as all the cricket fans look forward to the upcoming decade. The most awaited cricket event from the next decade is the 2023 World Cup which will take place in India. Virat Kohli’s men will look to continue the trend of host nations winning the World Cup by pulling off a clinical performance in 2023. Talking about the Indian ODI team, the Men in Blue achieved a lot of success in the 50-over format in the last 10 years. Be it winning the 2011 World Cup or seizing the 2013 Champions Trophy, the Indian team performed extraordinarily well in ODIs. However, they were a few individuals who could not live up to the expectations in the format. Here’s a look at India’s flop ODI XI of the decade: Murali Vijay Murali Vijay. (Photo Source: Getty Images) Matches – 17, Runs – 339, Highest Score – 72, Strike Rate – 66.99 The Tamil Nadu-based opening batsman, Murali Vijay received his maiden ODI cap after impressing in the IPL and domestic cricket. He made his ODI debut against South Africa in Ahmedabad on 27th February 2010. The right-handed batsman received ample amount of opportunities from the selectors. However, he could not cement his place in the team. With the likes of Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir still active in 50-overs cricket, Vijay’s failure to play well took him out of the team. Although he continued to open for India in Tests, he did not earn a place in the ODI team. His last ODI appearance came against Zimbabwe in July 2015. Vijay played 17 ODIs in his career and scored just 339 runs at a disappointing strike rate of 66.99. He could record only one half-century in 17 games and, he let the fans down with his performances. (Photo Source: DIBYANGSHU SARKAR/AFP via Getty Images) Matches – 24, Runs –604, Highest Score – 95, Strike Rate – 82.06 Opening the innings for India’s flop ODI XI of the decade along with Murali Vijay will be Gujarat’s wicket-keeper batsman, Parthiv Patel. He has not played a single ODI match since 2012 which itself showcases his poor form in the format. He played 24 matches for the Indian ODI side and aggregated 604 runs in this decade. The left-handed opening batsman could not breach the 100-run mark even once in the 24 games he played. His best ODI score in the last 10 years was 95. Though he had a decent strike rate of 82.06, his below-par average of 27.45 led to his exit from the team. Besides, Patel even got out for a duck once. He is active in the IPL and the domestic circuit but the chances of his comeback to team India are minimal. Cheteshwar Pujara Cheteshwar Pujara. (Photo Source: MUNIR UZ ZAMAN/AFP via Getty Images) Matches – 5, Runs –51, Highest Score – 27, Strike Rate – 39.23 One of the best Test batsmen of this decade, Cheteshwar Pujara lived up to his nickname of ‘Test specialist’ in ODI cricket. His consistent performances in the longest format of the game earned Pujara a call-up to the Indian ODI team in 2013. However, his ODI career lasted only 5 matches where the right-handed batsman scored 51 runs. His highest score was just 27 whereas his strike rate of 39.23 forced the selectors to drop him from the ODI squad. Given that Pujara played against the teams like Zimbabwe and Bangladesh further undermines his ODI career. Pujara has an average of 10.20 in 50-over cricket. With Virat Kohli holding the number 3 position in the Indian team right now, it is unlikely that he will ever get a chance to represent India in the One-Day Internationals ever. The 31-year-old played his last ODI versus Bangladesh in 2014. Subramaniam Badrinath Subramaniam Badrinath. The right-handed batsman had made his ODI debut against Sri Lanka in 2008 and in this decade, he played only 4 ODI games. The 39-year-old batted in the middle order for India but his strike rate of 47.05 often deterred India’s momentum. His highest score of 17 indicates that he did not play a single match-winning knock for the country in the 50 overs format during the last 10 years. Badrinath had a phenomenal batting average and a better strike rate in List A cricket. However, he could not replicate that performance at the international level. The former India player was once an integral part of the IPL franchise, Chennai Super Kings. Manoj Tiwary Manoj Tiwary. (Photo Source: Ishara S.KODIKARA/AFP/GettyImages) Matches – 11, Runs –285, Highest Score – 104*, Strike Rate – 73.64 The only batsman present in this team to have scored an ODI century in this decade is Bengal’s right-handed batsman, Manoj Tiwary. The former Rising Pune Supergiant player had made his ODI debut for India in the year 2008 versus Australia. However, his inconsistency and poor fitness levels did not allow him to cement his place in the team. The fact that Tiwary played an unbeaten knock of 104 runs in one innings means that he scored only 181 runs in the other 10 matches that he played in this decade. Besides, his strike rate of 73.84 also reflects the reason why his ODI career did not last long. He was known to be one of the most athletic fielders but, the injuries did not allow Tiwary to realize his full potential. His last ODI appearance came against Zimbabwe in 2015. Wriddhiman Saha Wriddhiman Saha. (Photo Source: INDRANIL MUKHERJEE/AFP via Getty Images) Matches – 9, Runs –41, Highest Score – 16, Strike Rate – 73.21 The wicket-keeper of India’s Test team, Wriddhiman Saha had received a few opportunities to prove himself in the ODI format during the first phase of this decade. The selectors gave him nine matches to cement his spot as the second wicket-keeper batsman however, he could not. The Bengal-based player could aggregate only 41 runs in those 9 matches with his highest score being 16. His strike rate of 73.21 shows that he could not live up to the expectations. Thus, the selectors did not give him more chances in the 50-over format. Saha had made his ODI debut in a match against New Zealand at Guwahati in the year 2010. His last ODI appearance came against Sri Lanka in 2014. The fact that he played only 9 matches in 5 years highlights his inability to play well in the limited-overs format. Rishi Dhawan Rishi Dhawan. (Photo Source: GREG WOOD/AFP via Getty Images) Matches – 3, Runs –12, Wickets – 1 After the 2015 World Cup, the Indian selectors tried many fast bowling all-rounders to provide balance to the Indian ODI team. Hardik Pandya emerged as the solution to India’s woes. However, the selectors had given an opportunity to Rishi Dhawan before Pandya’s debut. The Himachal Pradesh-born all-rounder made his ODI debut versus Australia Down Under. He got a chance to play 3 matches where Dhawan could aggregate only 12 runs while he managed to scalp only a solitary wicket. His highest score with the bat was 9. With the ball, he leaked runs at an expensive economy rate of 6.40. Also, his bowling average of 160 indicates the reason behind his ouster from the team. Although Dhawan has a good record in List A cricket, the former Mumbai Indians star could not make it big in international cricket. Abhimanyu Mithun Abhimanyu Mithun. (Photo Source: DIBYANGSHU SARKAR/AFP via Getty Images) Matches – 5, Wickets – 3, Best Figures – 2/32, Economy Rate – 6.76 Abhimanyu Mithun had recently grabbed the headlines after he took a five-wicket haul for Karnataka in the Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 Trophy finale against Haryana. However, the right-arm pacer had made his ODI debut for India way back in 2010. He debuted in the same match where Murali Vijay played his maiden ODI match for India. Unlike Vijay, Mithun’s career did not last long as he played his last ODI match against West Indies in 2011. The Karnataka star could only pick up 3 wickets in his short ODI career. The reason why the selectors were not interested in giving more chances to Mithun was his tendency to give away runs at a hammering rate in the slog overs. His economy rate of 6.76 and bowling average of 67.66 shows why he lost his place from the team. S Sreesanth S. Sreesanth. (Photo Source: MANAN VATSYAYANA/AFP via Getty Images) Matches – 12, Wickets – 16, Best Figures – 4/47, Economy Rate – 7.09 Deemed to be the next big thing in Indian cricket, S Sreesanth had made his ODI debut in the year 2005. He regularly played for the Indian ODI team and very few fans may remember that he had even represented the nation in the 2011 World Cup final against Sri Lanka. The grand finale was Sreesanth’s final ODI appearance for India. He played 11 matches in this decade before that match. The right-arm fast bowler grabbed 16 ODI wickets in this decade with his best bowling figures in ODIs being 4/47. However, his expensive economy rate did not help his case. The Kerala-based star gave away runs at an economy rate of 7.09 in the 12 games he played this decade. The match-fixing scandal forced BCCI to ban him from cricket during his prime thus, he makes it to this flop Indian ODI XI. Ashoke Dinda Ashoke Dinda. (Photo by Matthew Lewis-ICC/ICC via Getty Images) Matches – 13, Wickets – 12, Best Figures – 2/44, Economy Rate – 6.18 One of the fiercest fast bowlers that the country has ever produced, Ashoke Dinda made his ODI debut for India in 2010 after a string of impressive performances in the domestic circuit. The selectors were patient in his case however, Dinda could not repeat his domestic performances. He featured in 13 ODI games for India where he took 12 wickets while conceding runs at an economy rate of 6.18. His best bowling figures were 2/44 which highlight the fact that he was not a wicket-taking bowler. Dinda had made his ODI versus Zimbabwe in Bulawayo. His last ODI appearance for India came against England at Rajkot in 2013. The Bengal-based star had taken the wickets of Kevin Pietersen and Eoin Morgan in that match but, he leaked 53 runs in his 8 overs. Thus, the doors to the Indian team have been closed for Dinda. Pragyan Ojha Pragyan Ojha. (Photo Source: Ishara S.KODIKARA/AFP/GettyImages) Matches –9, Wickets – 9, Best Figures –3/36, Economy Rate – 4.36 The sole spin bowler to feature in this team is the left-arm orthodox spinner from Orissa, Pragyan Ojha. The former Mumbai Indians star was destined for great things after the extraordinary success he achieved in the longest format of the game. However, his ineffectiveness in the foreign conditions led to his exit from the team. Also, his bowling action had been under the scanner and was banned from bowling in 2014. He lost his golden touch once he returned from that suspension. The Bhubaneswar-born featured in 9 ODI games for the Men in Blue this decade. He took 9 wickets but the rise of Ravindra Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin did not allow Ojha to cement his place in the team. Also, he was not consistent in terms of picking wickets for the Indian ODI side.
