IPL 2018: Bengal CID busts a betting racket

Indian Premier League (IPL) is the richest and biggest cricket league in the world, however, it had to face its fair share of controversies. In the sixth season of the league, three Rajasthan Royals players were arrested and simultaneously banned for their involvement in the spot-fixing scandal. Since then, authorities have taken such matters seriously, as they have cracked down on the gambling rackets. According to reports, Bengal CID has caught 4 people for being involved in a betting racket.

Caught in north Bengal district of Jalpaiguri

Police got information about a betting racket and they conducted a raid to arrest Bhola Das, 32, Pravat Kangsa Banik, 30, Pankaj Saha, 21, and Gopal Sarkar, 38. These four arrests mean that 16 people have been arrested for being involved in the betting racket since 14th April.

A CID statement revealed that Gopal Sarkar was the organizer of the racket. While Bhola Das and Kangsa Banik used to collect money, and also placed bets. The CID managed to find documents regarding betting, a lot of cash and 10 mobile phones during the raid.

“During the search some incriminating documents regarding betting, 10 mobile phones and Rs 3,77,620 could be recovered (sic),” said the statement as per HT.

Not the first instance

Police arrested six people in Jalpaiguri town on 17th April, for placing bets on the match between Royal Challengers Banglore and Mumbai Indians. An engineering student was among these 6 arrested by the police.

There was a similar case in Kolkata on the same day, when police arrested 3 people who were staying in a rented house.

On April 14, the cops arrested two youngsters, Jayanta and Debabrata Biswas, from Gayeshpur in Nadia district and Pappu Das from Dumdum cantonment area in North 24 Parganas district, for their alleged involvement in betting related activities.

A sub-divisional officer in Kolkata said these people were caught with 2700 rupees cash and 3 mobile phone were seized by the police. “Three mobile phones, a tablet and Rs 2,700 in cash were seized from them,” said the sub-divisional police officer
