The eleventh edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) was aiming to gain massive viewership for a brand-new version of the most globalized and established Twenty20 tournament. The six matches contested so far have achieved huge milestones in terms of new viewership records and millions of cricket fans have played their role to support the event.

The IPL 2018 is certainly a highly regarded tournament, given the fact that star cricketers from India as well from different countries in the world will be making their appearance and add sparkle to the atmosphere and rejuvenate the competition. However, there are also some players who will not be able to participate in the tournament due to their respective injuries.

Are injury lists part of the IPL?

Injuries have always been a part of the IPL, since its inaugural edition in 2008. The regular cricket which is being played in the different parts of the world makes it very difficult for the international players to manage their fitness and with the evolution of the T20I format in a bilateral contest, teams have found it hard to preserve their match-winning players from injuries.

It is also a fact that teams want their players to be fit and ready to play for their country in Test cricket or One-day cricket first and the T20 leagues contested around the world are considered as the secondary priority.

List of injuries in IPL 2018

The major names who will be missing the eleventh edition of the IPL are the overseas cricketers who have been playing regular cricket for their respective countries in the last season. The major absentees include the likes of Aussie fast bowlers Mitchell Starc, Nathan Coulter- Nile, Patt Cummins, and Jason Behrendorff. Kiwi left-arm spinner Mitchell Santner, the Proteas in-form pacer Kagiso Rabada and India’s batsman Kedar Jadhav will also be missing the IPL 2018 season due to their respective injuries.

Young Afghanistan spinner Zahir Khan who was bought by the Rajasthan Royals as their overseas recruit has also sustained a major injury which has forced him to pull out of the major tournament.

Most of the franchises have also announced the replacements for these injured players. English cricketers Alex Hales, Liam Plunkett and David Wiley will be playing for Sunrisers Hyderabad, Delhi Daredevils and Chennai Super Kings respectively, as replacements for injured players. While Mumbai Indians have included Mitchell McClenaghan and Royals have roped in Ish Sodhi for the rest of the season.
