IPL 2019: 3 teams that might get new captains mid-season
Some players might leave midway through the season bearing in mind preparations for the World Cup.
Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) – AB de Villiers
Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) are by far one of the biggest underachievers in the history of the IPL. They’ve been a big disappointment across seasons as they have never won an IPL season despite having some of the biggest names in T20 cricket. After reaching the final in 2016, the Challengers have failed to make it to the playoffs in the last two editions of the extravaganza.
Virat Kohli is no doubt their captain and should play for most of the season. However, he has been talking about monitoring the workload of the World Cup-bound players. Hence, he might take breaks in between and if the need arises, he might take off from this season, depending on RCB’s situation in the tournament.
Hence, if that happens, there is no one better than AB de Villiers to lead the side. The retired South African star will play the entire IPL and is a very crucial member of the RCB set-up. He has vast captaincy experience as he led South Africa for close to five years.
De Villiers has never captained in any IPL game before but has been around for a long time. He has been with the Bangalore-based franchise for eight years now and understands the dynamics of the team and the grounds. Hence, the 35-year-old could be the perfect choice for RCB if Kohli decides to make way at some point in this season.
