Rohit Sharma made history on Sunday when he led the Mumbai Indians (MI) to lift their fourth Indian Premier League (IPL) title in Hyderabad, defeating MS Dhoni’s Chennai Super Kings (CSK) by a solitary run in the final. After putting up a moderate 149 for 8 in 20 overs, MI restricted CSK at 148 for 7 with Shane Watson’s 80 going in vain. With this title triumph, the MI maintained their sequence of winning the IPL every alternate year.

Jasprit Bumrah scalped 2 wickets while conceding 14 runs and went on to bag Man of the Match award. He did an excellent job in keeping it tight towards the end even as the CSK wanted 18 runs off the last 12 deliveries.

Shubman Gill was adjudged Emerging Player of the Season award

Kolkata Knight Riders’ (KKR) Shubman Gill was picked as the Emerging Player of the Season for his decent run in the series. He scored three fifties and had a strike rate of 124 plus. MI’s Kieron Pollard won the Perfect Catch of the Season award for his stunner at deep point off against CSK in the league stage to send back Suresh Raina.

Kings XI Punjab opener KL Rahul, who was in a terrific form with the bat this season and ended up as the second highest run-getter with 593 runs, was declared the Most Stylish Player of the Season and his award was collected by his friend Hardik Pandya of MI.

Imran Tahir wins purple cap pipping Kagiso Rabada

CSK’s Imran Tahir eventually toppled his compatriot Kagiso Rabada to become the highest wicket-taker in IPL 2019 by picking 26 wickets. He dismissed Ishan Kishan and Suryakumar Yadav in the final to pip Rabada, who took 25 wickets before getting ruled out of the tournament because of the injury. Tahir though took 17 matches to achieve the feat against Rabada’s 12. The 40-year-old will be playing his final ODI tournament in the World Cup starting later this month.

Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) opener David Warner won the Orange Cap by belting 692 runs in 12 matches before leaving for Australia for WC preparation. Despite missing the business end of the tournament, the left-hander remained 99 runs ahead of the second place-holder, Rahul. “An honour to win the Orange Cap. When we play, we don’t think of these awards. But must say congratulations to the curator for a good surface. Always a privilege to play in Hyderabad. Very grateful to be part of the IPL. Thank you very much,” Warner, who made a comeback from a year-long ban in March, said via a video message.

KKR’s Andre Russell was picked as the most valuable player for his extra-ordinary batting this season. His cheque was collected by Shubman. Russell finished with 510 runs in 14 games at a strike rate of 204 plus. He also got the Super Striker of the Season award. He was awarded a car besides money worth Rs 1 lakh.

The SRH, who lost in the eliminator, won the Fairplay Award and it was left for their mentor VVS Laxman to collect the trophy. Punjab Cricket Association and Hyderabad Cricket Association received the Pitch and Ground award.
