IPL 2019: Match 38, SRH vs KKR - Who Said What
Dinesh Karthik was extremely disappointed after a thumping loss.
The Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) have literally thumped the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at the Rajiv Gandhi international stadium. It never seemed as if two teams were playing today as the visitors didn’t challenge the SRH at any stage in the game. They were expected to make the most of the score posted on the board. But being lacklustre on the field cost them as Jonny Bairstow and David Warner pummelled the hapless bowlers.
After losing the toss, the KKR openers got the team off to a flyer. Sunil Narine raced to 25 off just 8 balls and it seemed as if it will be a high-scoring game. But Narine’s wicket killed all the momentum the visitors had with them. KKR lost quick wickets soon and despite Chris Lynn being in the middle, they could never accelerate.
Sending Rinku Singh ahead of Andre Russell didn’t help as well and though the former scored 30 runs, no one can have the impact the Caribbean could’ve managed. Russell walked in with only 27 balls left and didn’t get much of the strike either. He could only score 15 runs off nine deliveries as KKR finished on 159 runs for the loss of eight wickets after 20 overs.
Bairstow and Warner pummel KKR
The chase could’ve been tricky for SRH as the pitch had slowed down considerably during KKR’s innings. But KC Cariappa dropped Jonny Bairstow when he was on 1 and it was all one-way traffic from there on. Both Bairstow and Warner made the opposition pay heavily as the duo stitched 131-run stand in just 74 balls. Both of them got to their respective half-centuries and just when it seems that SRH will win by 10 wickets, the debutant Yarra Prithviraj struck to castle Warner.
But the match was done and dusted by then as Bairstow finished the game in a hurry with five overs to spare. The Englishman remained unbeaten on 80 off just 43 deliveries while the skipper Kane Williamson also seemed to be in good nick as he scored 8 runs in a straight-forward chase.
Man of the Match, Khaleel Ahmed said:
Quite a good feeling. The wicket was a little bit slow. After a while, I understood how the wicket was behaving. They played exceptionally well. My mom used to tell me win a man of the match award and I dedicate this award to her. I have been working on my fitness and trying to get stronger.
Sunrisers Hyderabad skipper, Kane Williamson said:
I don’t think it changed a huge amount. It slowed down a bit. We kept them down to a low total. It was a complete performance. It is tough tournament. You need to adapt. Let’s hope they continue. Everyone is trying to play their roles.
To take nothing away from the first half, the bowlers did really well. It has been a pleasure to watch them bat. We know that we would come in as a middle order when needed. They (Bairstow and Warner) are gonna be big losses. They are world class players and they will be missed at the back end.
Kolkata Knight Riders skipper, Dinesh Karthik said:
I think 160 was a par score on this wicket if we’d bowled well. I think they (Warner and Bairstow) batted really well but our fielding cost us. And after that dropped catch he (Bairstow) came at us all guns blazing. A wicket of Bairstow would have felt better, feel for the guy (Yarra Prithviraj).
We have been outplayed in this game. Having said that our bowling has been off colour in the tournament. Our fielding needs a lot of improvement too. A form issue with (Kuldeep) – as he couldn’t stand up for us in the last game. We had to give him a break and get him back fresh.
