IPL 2020: 4 players who can lead Chennai Super Kings in MS Dhoni’s absence
Dhoni might or might not make it to 2020 T20 World Cup, but the mere prospect of seeing him on the field after eight long months will be a sight to cherish.
2. Faf du Plessis
Du Plessis who was replaced by Quinton de Kock as South Africa’s ODI skipper earlier this month recently stepped down as the Proteas’ Test and T20I skipper as well. The 35-year-old who joined Chennai Super Kings in 2011 represented the now-defunct Rising Pune Supergiant when CSK was serving two-year (2016 and 2017) suspension from the IPL.
The Pretoria-born batsman who has 1853 IPL runs to his name finished the inaugural Mzansi Super League season as his side’s (Paarl Rocks) highest run-getter with 318 runs at an astonishing strike-rate of 156.65. He continued his impressive run in IPL season twelve that followed having amassed 396 runs in 12 matches that include three half-centuries for eventual runners-up Chennai Super Kings.
Though he did not have a memorable campaign with the bat in 2019-20 Mzansi Super League season (219 runs in ten innings), he led Paarl Rocks to their first-ever title as they defeated Tshwane Spartans by eight wickets in the final. Given his success as a captain in the Mzansi Super League, du Plessis looks to be a serious contender to lead in Dhoni’s absence during 2020 IPL.
