IPL 2022: Best overseas XI from the seventh week

We are done and dusted with the seventh week of IPL 2022 with Punjab Kings thrashing the Royal Challengers Bangalore by 54 runs. This result has now thrown the playoff qualification scenarios even more wide open than before, with as many as seven teams competing for the remaining three spots, Gujarat Titans have already qualified for the playoffs. On the other hand, Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians are officially knocked out of the competition. Before we enter the final week of league games, let us have a look at the Best Overseas XI comprising of best performances by overseas players in the past week. Here’s a look at the Best overseas XI after the seventh week of IPL 2022: 1. Devon Conway (CSK) Devon Conway. (Photo Source: IPL/BCCI) Ever since Devon Conway returned to the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) camp post his marriage, his form seems to have touched new highs. He continued his good form against the Delhi Capitals this week, although he had a rare failure in the last match against the Mumbai Indians. Against DC, his team was in a do-or-die situation then, and he stepped up to the task. He struck five sixes and seven fours in his 49-ball 87. What was interesting to see was the fact that he counter-attacked DC’s in-form Kuldeep Yadav. He was rather unlucky in the next match, as he was dismissed for a first-ball duck, though he was hard done by the unavailability of DRS at that time due to power failure. He has forged some successful opening partnerships with Ruturaj Gaikwad in the last few games. It would be fair to say that Chennai Super Kings have found an able replacement for du Plessis this season, and can only expect bigger things from him in the years to come. 2. Faf du Plessis (c) (RCB) Faf du Plessis. (Photo Source: IPL/BCCI) The former Proteas skipper Faf du Plessis has been a valuable pick for the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB). He provides solidity at the top, can bat through the innings and is also a very fine leader. While Kohli has been in a terrible form this season, it’s du Plessis who has held the RCB’s batting together. This week, he played yet another solid knock that anchored RCB’s innings against the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH). His knock of 73*(50) included two sixes and eight fours. Courtesy of him, RCB were able to post a mammoth score of 192, which in turn they managed to defend with ease. In the match against Punjab Kings, Faf du Plessis wasn’t able to convert his start and got out for only 10 runs. He has been excellent with his captaincy skills and that is the reason he has been chosen as the captain of this best overseas playing XI as well. 3. Mitchell Marsh (DC) Mitchell Marsh. (Photo Source: IPL/BCCI) The all-rounder from Australia has been in some fine form since the T20 World Cup last year. After overcoming injury and Covid concerns, he seems to be emulating his good form for DC as well. This week, he has impressed everyone with both bat and ball. Against CSK, he could only manage a 20-ball 25 before he holed out against Moeen Ali. His best knock to date in IPL came against the Rajasthan Royals. He rode his luck early on in the chase as Boult and Samson missed out on a certain LBW review. However, Marsh made sure to make them pay. Although he clobbered seven sixes and five fours in his knock of 89, his innings was well in control and wasn’t just blind power hitting. He also picked up two wickets against RR and a solitary wicket against CSK. Even after recovering from an injury, he is at least bowling a couple of overs in every match that he has played, and that makes his utility as a player even higher. 4. Jonny Bairstow (wk) (PBKS) Jonny Bairstow. (Photo Source: IPL/BCCI) The wicketkeeper-batsman from England has had an on-again-off-again kind of a season so far. Although he has had a majority of his success this season at the top of the order, he has shown flexibility by batting in the middle order too. This week, he played two games and scored a fifty in each one of them. Firstly, it was against RR where he scored 56(40). Not a typical Bairstow innings, but still important for his team as they managed to score 189, albeit in a losing cause. Then came the match against RCB where he absolutely tore into Siraj and Hazlewood’s bowling. He smashed seven sixes and four fours in his 66(29) with a strike rate in excess of 227. His belligerent knock against RCB helped Punjab get two crucial points and keep their playoffs chances alive. Safe behind the stumps, Bairstow has been chosen to keep wickets for this team as well. 5. Liam Livingstone (PBKS) Liam Livingstone. (Photo Source: IPL/BCCI) The hard-hitting Liam Livingstone is finally living up to the hype created around him over the years. He is currently striking at a freakish strike rate of 180.75, with nearly 385 runs so far this season. A more than capable part-time spinner, Livingstone is one of the finest T20 players going around. In his first match of this week against RR, he played a cameo of 22(14) right towards the end of the innings. However, this cameo of his couldn’t win the match for his side. Against RCB, he had a much better outing. Carrying on after the good work by Bairstow, Livingstone struck a powerful 70(42), consisting of five fours and four sixes. His innings powered Punjab Kings to 209/9, as a result of which they were able to win the match convincingly. Livingstone’s form is going to be crucial as Punjab has only two games left and they need to win both the matches with a good net run rate. 6. Andre Russell (KKR) Andre Russell. (Photo Source: IPL/BCCI) Andre Russell has been a T20 stalwart for nearly a decade now, and he keeps on putting up impressive performances for his team. The Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) probably had one of their worst matches this season against the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) where they were bundled out for just 101 runs in the second innings. Russell’s show was perhaps the only silver lining in that match. After picking up two wickets in the first innings, Russell went on to score 45 runs out of the total of 101 that his team had managed. Against Mumbai Indians (MI), however, he failed with the bat but still picked up a couple of wickets. He is without a doubt KKR’s most dangerous batsman and as far as this season is considered, one of their best bowlers too. Much of KKR’s performances have been largely dependent on his individual performances, which is something the team must look into in the future. 7. Daniel Sams (MI) Daniel Sams. (Photo Source: IPL/BCCI) One season for DC, one for RCB, and now he seems to have landed for good in MI. He bowls in the powerplay as well as death overs and has impressed everyone with his swing and variations. He had a decent game against KKR where he returned with respectable figures of 1-26. However, his best game so far came against CSK. He made the new ball talk and dismissed CSK’s top three (Gaikwad, Conway, Moeen). His figures of 3-16 even earned him the player of the match award. His efforts meant that CSK were dismissed for just 97 runs, a target that MI achieved with a few hiccups of their own. A proper all-rounder, Sams was promoted to number three by the MI management in order to make light work of the chase. But that did not happen as he got out for just one run. Still, he is a fine all-round player and MI can expect bigger things from him both with the bat and ball. 8. Wanindu Hasaranga (RCB) Wanindu Hasaranga. (Photo Source: IPL/BCCI) A lot of eyebrows were raised when RCB went after Hasaranga in place of Chahal at the auction earlier this year. Hasaranga, has done well to justify his team’s decision as he sits on top of the purple cap leaderboard with 23 wickets to his name, and the person occupying the second spot is none other than Chahal himself with the same number of wickets. This week itself, Hasaranga has managed to pick up seven wickets in just two games. He ran through SRH’s middle and lower order as he recorded his best IPL figures of 5-18. Against Punjab too, he picked up a couple of wickets and was quite economical, as he gave away only 15 runs from his quota of four overs. An explosive batter at number eight, Hasaranga can hit the ball a long way, Although this week he got to bat only once and couldn’t do much. RCB would be hoping he starts contributing with the bat as well going forward. 9. Rashid Khan (GT) Rashid Khan. (Photo Source: IPL/BCCI) One of the most sought after players in T20 cricket, Rashid Khan has evolved into a dependable all-rounder off late. This season itself he has scored runs at crucial times and has formed a dangerous finishing pair with Rahul Tewatia. This week he played only one game and it was against LSG where he was phenomenal with the ball. Gujarat Titans had only scored 144 runs, and opposition team LSG would have fancied their chances to chase it down easily and take the first playoffs berth. However, Rashid had different plans. He broke the back of LSG’s batting order and picked up four wickets. He gave away only 24 runs in 3.5 overs. Apart from batting and bowling, Rashid had impressed everyone with his captaincy skills too whenever regular skipper Hardik Pandya was out with injury. As Gujarat Titans gear up for the playoffs, Rashid’s form is going to be crucial for his team’s success. 10. Kagiso Rabada (PBKS) Kagiso Rabada. (Photo Source: IPL/BCCI) The tall pacer from South Africa is never out of contention for the purple cap race, having won it already once in 2020. This year too, with 21 wickets to his name, he is just two wickets shy of Hasaranga and Chahal. Against RR, Rabada went for 50 runs but he managed to pick up the all-important wicket of Jos Buttler. Though, he made sure it didn’t happen against RCB. After picking up the wicket of a slightly in-form Kohli, Rabada came back to dismiss Shahbaz and Harshal Patel too, thereby closing the lid on RCB’s chances in the chase. Rabada has been the strike bowler for Punjab this season. He alongside Arshdeep have owned the death overs stage and kept the economy rates in check while also picking up wickets regularly. With a couple more wins, Punjab could well reach the playoffs and if Rabada’s form continues, they can even lift the title for the first time. 11. Anrich Nortje (DC) Anrich Nortje (Photo Source: IPL/BCCI) The speedster has been injury-ridden this season. He played one game against LSG and had to miss a few games post that. However, it now seems that he is back for good. This week, he picked up five wickets in the two games that DC had played. Against CSK, although he was expensive, he picked up wickets at crucial intervals. He first broke the stubborn opening stand by dismissing Gaikwad, then bowled well in the final over to get the wickets of Moeen Ali and Uthappa. Against the Royals too, he gave away a few too many runs but picked up two important wickets as well. Firstly, he dismissed the dangerous-looking Padikkal, then he got the skipper Samson out cheaply, to make sure that RR didn’t get a massive score on the board. Nortje‘s form and fitness could probably decide whether DC could reach the playoffs or not this season.
