IPL 2022: Ranking teams based on sixes hit by them

When the IPL announced the addition of two new franchises to the tournament, fans expected more entertainment from the blockbuster season, but nobody in their right mind would’ve expected to witness 1062 sixes across 74 games, averaging 14 sixes per game in IPL 2022. The numbers were helped greatly by the menacing form of Jos Buttler, who was the leading six-hitter in this year’s tournament with 45 sixes to his name. Liam Livingstone showcased his power-hitting abilities in IPL 2022 with 34 sixes. The Englishman recorded the biggest six this year with his 117-meter monstrous hit against Gujarat’s Mohammed Shami. Andre Russell and KL Rahul were the other usual suspects as they hit 32 and 30 sixes, respectively. Ranking sides according to sixes by them in IPL 2022 10. Gujarat Titans- 79 sixes Gujarat Titans. (Photo Source: IPL/BCCI) The Gujarat Titans fans will not mind this stat one bit, as their team triumphed in the IPL 2022 final by defeating Rajasthan Royals. It’s a surprising stat considering that they have been one of the most consistent batting sides in the competition this year. David Miller was the team’s leading man in terms of sixes as he hit 23 sixes for the Titans. Hardik Pandya who is a gifted power hitter, curbed his instincts after donning the captaincy role as he finished with 12 sixes. Shubman Gill hit only 11 sixes this year but was 3rd on the list for the most fours this season with 51 to his name followed by skipper Pandya (49). The all-rounder duo of Rashid Khan and Rahul Tewatia hit nine sixes apiece as they donned the role of pinch hitters in the death overs and scripted some improbable heists for the Gujarat Titans. 9. Sunrisers Hyderabad – 97 Sixes Sunrisers Hyderabad. (Photo Source: IPL/BCCI) Sunrisers Hyderabad has more stroke makers than six hitters in their team. The departure of influential David Warner didn’t help their cause either, as the explosive southpaw has got 211 sixes to his name in IPL history. The batting duo of Nicholas Pooran and Aiden Markram were crucial for their side in the middle overs and shared 40 sixes between them, with Pooran accounting for 21 of those. Rahul Tripathi had a fabulous season with the bat as he was SRH’s 2nd highest run-getter this year and hit 20 sixes in the process of getting those runs. SRH’s leading run-scorer, Abhishek Sharma showed his hand well against the spinners, as he hit 13 sixes. Their Kiwi captain, Kane Williamson had a forgetful tournament with the bat as he struggled for runs in the middle. Williamson hit just eight sixes for SRH in IPL 2022. 8. Mumbai Indians – 100 sixes Mumbai Indians. (Photo Source: IPL/BCCI) Mumbai Indians had one of the worst outings of their illustrious history, as the five-time champions finished at the bottom of the table. The struggles of the opening pair of Ishan Kishan and Rohit Sharma in IPL 2022 were well documented and were one of the major reasons for their poor performance this year. The poor form of powerful Kieron Pollard didn’t help their cause either. Suryakumar Yadav was one of their best batters this tournament for them, and he hit 16 sixes in eight games. One of the positives for MI in IPL 2022 was Tim David’s six-hitting prowess. He hit 16 sixes in his brief cameos this year but is surely going to be one of the most dangerous batters in the coming seasons. Mumbai’s prodigious bulwark, Tilak Verma was their best player this season, and he too hit 16 sixes. Skipper Rohit Sharma contributed with 13 sixes. Ishan Kishan struggled for form up until the last few games, as the southpaw had 11 sixes to his name, a low tally considering his talent. Dewald Brevis is another name that fans will be hearing more of in the coming years, as the fearless batter hit 11 sixes this year. 7. Royal Challengers Bangalore – 102 sixes Royal Challengers Bangalore. (Photo Source: IPL/BCCI) Royal Challengers endured another heartbreaking season, as they failed at the last hurdle before the final against Rajasthan Royals. Their talisman Virat Kohli suffered one of his worst seasons in IPL history. Dinesh Karthik added another dimension to his batting this term, as he donned the role of finisher for his side. The wicketkeeper-batter hit 22 sixes for RCB. The young sensation Rajat Patidar was the major contributor in the knockout games. He had 18 sixes to his name in just eight innings. The famed big hitter Glenn Maxwell contributed with impactful cameos in IPL 2022 but couldn’t deliver big in the all-important game against RR. He finished with 15 sixes to his name. The current RCB skipper, Faf du Plessis, failed to contribute in the final two games and finished with 13 sixes this year. 6. Chennai Super Kings – 103 sixes Chennai Super Kings. (Photo Source: IPL/BCCI) The defending champions had a nightmare start to the season under the new leadership of Ravindra Jadeja. The all-rounder relinquished his role mid-way of IPL 2022, and MS Dhoni took charge of the side. The Chennai side suffered heavily due to the poor form of their batters throughout the IPL. Shivam Dube was the team’s highest-six hitter with 16 sixes to his name. All-rounder showed glimpses of his talent this year but was inconsistent with his performances. Ambati Rayudu also endured a forgetful tournament with the bat and hit 15 sixes. Robin Uthappa and Ruturaj Gaikwad finished with 14 sixes each. One of the positives for the four-time winners was the arrival of Kiwi batter, Devon Conway. Conway was paired with Gaikwad at the top of the order as they dominated the opposition bowlers. The southpaw hit 12 sixes in his brief stint in the IPL 2022. CSK skipper, MS Dhoni bagged ten sixes in a disappointing season for his side. 5. Delhi Capitals – 106 sixes Delhi Capitals. (Photo Source: IPL/BCCI) Delhi Capitals had their fate in their own hands as they faced Mumbai in their last league game to seal their place in the Playoffs. But the Capital side faltered in the all-important game as their batters failed to deliver. Rishab Pant’s side failed to string victories throughout IPL 2022 as they were inconsistent with their performances. Rovman Powell was one of their shining lights, with the West Indian smashed 22 sixes. Rishabh Pant enjoyed a decent season with the bat as he hit 16 sixes this year. The resurgence of David Warner continued under Pant, as the southpaw finished with 15 sixes to his name. Mitch Marsh provided the much-desired stability to DC’s middle order as the all-rounder hit 14 sixes in just eight games. Axar Pater also showcased his all-around abilities as he hit ten sixes, the same number as Prithvi Shaw. 4. Punjab Kings – 110 sixes Punjab Kings. (Photo Source: IPL/BCCI) Although the Punjab side was without Chris Gayle, their all-out attack mentality, paid dividends. But much like Delhi, they lacked consistency and failed to qualify for the playoffs for the 6th time running. The addition of Liam Livingstone to the squad played a huge role in Punjab’s pursuit of a playoff berth. The Englishman hit the 2nd most number of sixes in IPL 2022 with 34 sixes to his name. He also did the honors of smashing the ball out of the ground for the 1000th six of the tournament. Bhanuka Rajapaksa finished with 13 sixes in nine games. The ever-so-dependable Shikhar Dhawan bagged 12 sixes this year, and the young Jitesh Sharma, who was in his debut season, impressed with 12 sixes to his name. Shahrukh Khan and Jonny Bairstow grabbed nine sixes apiece. Skipper Mayank Agarwal endured a torrid time with the bat with just six sixes in the competition. 3. Kolkata Knight Riders – 113 sixes Kolkata Knight Riders. (Photo Source: IPL/BCCI) Last year’s runner-ups started well in IPL 2022 under the new leadership of Shreyas Iyer. But the lack of form of their star batters, especially the openers halted their progress to the playoffs this year. Andre Russell lit up this year’s competition with his trademark power-hitting display, as he brutalized bowlers with 32 sixes in 12 games. The all-rounder found a company in the form of Nitish Rana, who hit 22 sixes in IPL 2022. The KKR skipper, Shreyas Iyer also contributed with 11 sixes to his name. Sam Billings was impressive in his few outings as he bagged ten sixes in eight games. Rinku Singh was one of the feel-good stories of this year’s tournament, he had seven sixes to his name. Pat Cummins also bagged an unlikely six sixes to his name, with all six of those coming in mind-boggling innings of 56 in just 15 balls against MI. He equaled the record for the fastest fifty ever in the IPL (14 balls) during that innings. 2. Lucknow Super Giants – 115 sixes Lucknow Super Giants. (Photo Source: IPL/BCCI) The other new franchise of this year’s tournament, Lucknow was led by the elegant Indian opener KL Rahul. They were one of the favorites to go all the way in IPL 2022 but, failed in the knockout stages against RCB. KL Rahul was sensational up top as usual and received support from the South African, Quinton de Kock. Rahul grabbed 30 sixes, whereas De Kock ended with 23 sixes. De Kock’s ten sixes against KKR were the most by a batter in an innings in IPL 2022 as the southpaw recorded this year’s highest individual score with 140* in that innings. Deepak Hooda was another batter who had an impressive outing for the new franchise this season. The middle-order batter smacked 18 sixes this year. Marcus Stoinis was impressive with his brief cameos as the Aussie all-rounder bludgeoned 13 sixes. 1. Rajasthan Royals – 137 sixes Rajasthan Royals. (Photo Source: IPL/BCCI) In contrast to the other finalists and eventual winners, Rajasthan Royals hit the most number of sixes in this year’s tournament, and for a large part of the IPL 2022, they were the team to beat. Sanju Samson will be disappointed by the performance of his batters in the finale, as they posted a below-par total on the board for Gujarat to chase. Jos Buttler amassed 863 runs in IPL 2022, a tally only bested by Virat Kohli’s 973 in 2016. The Orange Cap winner recorded four centuries, the joint-most by a batter in an IPL season. The Englishmen also finished with most fours and most sixes in the tournament. He hit an astonishing 45 sixes in IPL 2022. Royals’ skipper Sanju Samson supported Buttler well as he had 26 sixes to his name. Royal’s middle-order power hitter, Shimron Hetmyer, hit 21 towering sixes in the competition. Devdutt Paddikal who had a par season with the Royals ended with 14 sixes to his name. Rajasthan’s stylish young opener, Yashasvi Jaiswal hit ten sixes in IPL 2022.
