IPL: 5 instances when MS Dhoni was involved in a controversy
Despite having a huge amount of respect in world cricket as well as in IPL, there have been instances when Dhoni's name was there in some serious controversies.
4. The no-ball controversy against Rajasthan Royals in 2019
The “Captain Cool” was found losing his cool during a league match against Rajasthan Royals in 2019. The match was being played at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium Jaipur. The situation was very tense and the former captain of the Chennai Super Kings was seen being very aggressive. All of the things started with a No-ball signal by the umpire.
CSK was chasing RR’s first innings total and they needed eight runs to win off three balls. Ben Stokes was bowling the last over and Mitchell Santner was on strike accompanied by Ravindra Jadeja at the non-striking end. While bowling the fourth ball of the over, Stokes bowled a full toss and Santner managed to get it away for a double.
The umpire Ulhas Gandhe signaled a no-ball but the decision was overruled by the leg-umpire Bruce Oxenford, who had the better view of the situation. Santner and Jadeja protested but Oxenford did not budge. Angry MS Dhoni walked onto the pitch and signaled that the bowling-end umpire had signaled a no-ball. Despite a heated argument between Dhoni and Oxenford, it was not declared a no-ball.
