IPL: Number of matches played by Delhi Daredevils players for Team India

The Indian Premier League is arguably the most widely followed T20 league in the world. The players rate the tournament very highly and the fan following that the tournament has is unmatched by any other league. Over the years, the IPL has given several international players a big boost in their careers. In fact, for many rookies, the tournament has proved to be the ideal stepping stone for many young cricketers to make the cut at the highest level.

Last season, the Delhi Daredevils boasted of a very young side. Albeit they had a poor outing in the tournament, the players did light up the occasion with individual performances on many occasions. The success story of these young guns was not confined to the IPL only. They went on to play for the national side as well.

Here we look at the number of matches played by the Delhi Daredevils players for Team India since the inception of IPL:

Over the years, the Delhi Daredevils has failed to succeed as a unit. They have failed to get the results going their way. However, they have managed to produce some of the best young players who went on to play for the Indian team. In the year 2013, only 7 matches were played by the Indian team that featured the Delhi Daredevils players.

The next year saw a massive upsurge with 16 matches being played by the DD players. The fluctuating numbers continued as the count dipped to just 4 in 2015. In the 2016 and the 2017 seasons, the Indian team has played 19 and 16 matches respectively with the DD players’ representation.

DD players who made most of their opportunity

There have been big names surfacing in the Indian side after successful sting with the Delhi Daredevils. Veteran leggie Amit Mishra made a comeback to the Indian side a season ago. In the younger lot, the likes of Sanju Samson and Karun Nair got a look in as well. Nair went on to score a Test triple ton. However, both of them have parted ways from the franchise now.

Young wicketkeeper batsman Rishabh Pant is another success story of the Daredevils camp. He is tipped to be the next big thing in the Indian cricket. Furthermore, batsman Shreyas Iyer has also made it to the Indian team after a couple of very good seasons with the DD camp.

DD players to lookout for this year

In the upcoming season, the Delhi camp has two stars from the victorious India U19 camp. Prithvi Shaw and Manjot Kalra are very capable batsmen willing to take the next big step in their respective careers. Also, the squad had veteran Tamil Nadu cricketer Vijay Shankar. Vijay Shankar has been in the Indian squad on a couple of assignments already and is likely to be seen in Indian colors soon.

Veteran left arm spinner Shahbaz Nadeem has been picking up wickets at will in the domestic cricket. He should, someday or the other, get a chance to represent the national side. Nadeem is a very effective bowler in all the three formats of the game.
