'It just doesn't surprise me' - Michael Vaughan slams England for dismal action in Ashes opener
Australia won the Ashes opener by nine wickets.
The high-profile Test series between England and Australia, Ashes, is currently on and the hosts have got the dreamy start by clinching a nine-wicket loss in the opening game. Joe Root and his men were left clueless when the Kangaroos brought their A-game to the table right from day one.
In the same light of events, former English skipper Michael Vaughan seemed quite disgusted with his team’s performance and slammed his side. He also added that he wasn’t surprised with what happened with English men as they tend to ignore some fundamental issues to better up their strategies.
“I thought that might happen. It happens a lot to this England side where you get a load of hope and, before you know it, you’re done and dusted quite quickly. Everything that’s happened this week just does not surprise me,” said Vaughan while speaking on foxsports.com.au.
Michael Vaughan opens up in detail about England’s first Test loss
“You kind of have hope that things can be different and they’ll get it right because they’ve got so much talent in the team, but fundamentally against the best teams, this is what England do. If you look at it over the past few years, when they’ve played the better teams – Australia, India, New Zealand; it happened in the summer that we’ve just had, it happened against Australia in 2019 – this England side, they have horrendous sessions,” he added.
Talking of the first game, nothing absolutely went in favour of the hosts as they decided to bat first only to get wrapped up on mere 147 runs. At the same time, new Test skipper Pat Cummins wreaked havoc with his five-for. Adding to their woes, Travis Head’s 150 pushed the hosts to post huge 425 runs on the board. Even while Joe Root and Dawid Malan returned while scoring 89 and 82 respectively, they couldn’t come close to the target.
In return, Australians chased their target of 20 runs in just five overs. With the result, Australia now has a lead of 1-0 in the five-match Test series.
