Jonty Rhodes justifies his belated tweet on AB de Villiers' retirement
The duo never played together for South Africa but share a special camaraderie for each other.
24th May 2018 was one of the saddest and shocking days in the World cricket as one of the best batsmen in Modern era bid adieu to the international cricket. AB de Villiers reached South Africa after playing in the Indian Premier League (IPL) and dropped a bombshell on his teammates, cricket board and the fans worldwide. The wishes poured in from all the corners of the cricketing fraternity for him as his dear friend and the former South African cricketer Jonty Rhodes missed out. However, he has now thanked him for all the memories.
Rhodes and De Villiers never shared the same dressing room for South Africa but share a special camaraderie for each other. The former has even penned down the foreword for his autobiography in which he has described the brilliance which he witnessed in the Indian Premier League albeit sitting in the opposition ranks. Rhodes has recalled his whirlwind masterclass of ABD in his foreword and has termed it absolutely special while ranking him as one of the best cricketers of the modern era.

The duo recently appeared on the chat show ‘What the Duck’ which is hosted by Vikram Sathaye and both spoke highly about each other. No wonder, Jonty Rhodes was taken aback with a sudden decision of De Villiers to hang his boots from the international arena. He came up with a delayed tweet for him and also managed to find the picture when they practised together.
He explained the same reason in his tweet for his belated post in which he thanked AB de Villiers for all the memories and the entertainment over the last 14 years. “When @ABdeVilliers17 announced his retirement on 24/05 many teammates past and present posted pic’s of their time together with 1 of the most innovative cricket players of the modern era – I obviously had to look a little further back than most! Thanks for the memories Abraham,” he wrote in his tweet.
Both of them are regarded as the legends in South African cricket but unfortunately, they ended their careers without winning the World Cup. They deserved the highest level of glory but the way they entertained the fans will remain etched in their hearts forever.
