KL Rahul pleased with Indian cricket’s current phase

KL Rahul, India’s newest batting sensation has come out in complete praise of the Indian cricket team following their impressive series win against the West Indies. A win in the third Test at the Darren Sammy Stadium in St. Lucia saw the Men In Blue not only complete a whitewash but also make a strong case for themselves in the official ICC World Rankings.

KL Rahul, who has been a major part of the Indian team’s ascend to the top with a century in the series. While the Indians are currently facing a selection conundrum in the opening slot, KL Rahul seems to be certain about his spot as an opener of the side.

Speaking about the type of cricket they play, Rahul said that the aggressive style of cricket is something skipper Virat Kohli expects from his tea,“Look, when Virat Kohli set out as a Test captain, we sat down after the tour of Australia and discussed a lot of things. We discussed how this young team wants to play. We set ourselves a few goals. We discussed how we want to play cricket for the next four-five years. We set very high standards for ourselves.

“We decided to play fearless cricket and be aggressive. You would have seen that in the last year or so that we go out there and have a fearless approach. In the last match, we scored at 4.52 runs per over in the second innings. The boys have stuck to the goals. Individually, we have worked towards getting better. It is a very happy moment for this young side. We’re looking forward to the fourth Test and want to wrap this up with one more win,” Rahul added.

Rahul also went on to add the importance of the support they receive from the BCCI. “The support we got from the fans, from the BCCI has been great and the support staff has always been there to inspire us to give better performances. This is a great phase for Indian cricket and we are going to go higher from here and retain the No. 1 spot for a long time.”

Speaking about the mood in the India camp right now, Rahul attributed it to the age of the players at the moment. “Absolutely. We’re a young unit and the boys want to learn from each other. We want to take the group along and not just improve personally. If you come be a part of this team, you will realize that there is just not one guy working hard throughout the day. If I am going to the gym, I will take 3-4 guys along and even if we are tired, we push each other to work hard. We have been enjoying each day on the field. We play so much cricket, but the attitude we carry on every single day is wonderful to see. Hopefully, we can keep carrying this attitude and perform better and better.”

Finally, speaking about the world no. 1 ranking, Rahul said, “Yes, that was the most pleasing thing for me personally to have played all three formats of the game and be consistent. It is something I pushed to get better. I knew I had the skills. It was about how to put up consistent performances game after game and that is what was lacking. I didn’t play a lot of Test cricket in the last eight-nine months and that is what I worked on. Now, I want to go out there and perform and enjoy the pressure. Give good starts for my team as that is very important as an opening batsman. I am really happy and I want to keep doing this for my team.”

“It is important to be mentally strong. We have been playing a lot of cricket, so it does not mean we have had no practice at all. We have been in a good space mentally and have played cricket for 15 or more days, so missing out on a couple of sessions won’t matter. It gives you an extra day of break. I think physically we are feeling hungry and we want to go out there and play five days of good, hard cricket. “
