KSL 2017, Match 7 Review: Chamari Atapattu's blitz scripts third straight defeat for Loughborough Lightning
Chamari Atapattu received the player of the match award for her all-round performance in the game.
The Loughborough Lightning suffered their third consecutive loss in this edition of Kia Super League as they went down to Yorkshire Diamonds in a rain-affected game. Yorkshire scored 110/5 in the restricted 13 overs with Chamari Atapattu striking a quick 66* after a delayed start at the Haslegrave Ground in Loughborough. Later the Lightning side was kept down to only 93/5 in the chase by the Diamonds’ bowlers.
A heavy downpour with hailstones ahead of the game delayed the start and eventually reduced the match to 13 overs-a-side. The home team skipper Georgia Elwiss invited the Diamonds to bat first and their decision looked to be working with Lauren Winfield and Sophie Devine being dismissed cheaply. Chamari Atapattu kept scoring runs on the other end at an expeditious pace despite the fall of wickets.
She brought up her fifty in just 32 balls and put on a 35-run stand for the 3rd wicket with Katherine Brunt in just 3 overs. Brunt scored 21 in just 10 balls before she was run out for the 2nd time in as many games. However, the Sri Lankan left-hander batted till the end by scoring 66 off just 40 balls which included 9 fours and two sixes.
Atapattu and Brunt, the stars with the bat for Diamonds struck with the ball too by getting rid of the top order before the 5th over. Brunt ripped through Amy Jones and trapped Ellyse Perry in front off consecutive balls of her first two overs while Atapattu got better of Elyse Villani. Devine got the wicket of Thea Brookes as the home side were reduced 31/4 in 6th over with another 80 runs for the victory.
Captain Elwiss put on a 48-run stand in six overs with Sonia Odedra before getting out to Atapattu. She top scored for her side with 41 off 28 balls with five fours and a six. The Lightning ended up with 93/5 in the 13 overs falling short of the Yorkshire’s score by 17 runs. Chamari Atapattu received the player of the match award for her all-round performance in the game.
