‘Love is a four-legged word’ – Washington Sundar commemorates his Test debut naming his pet dog ‘Gabba’
On Sundar's Test debut, India beat Australia by three wickets in Brisbane.
Back in January, Washington Sundar’s joy knew no bounds after he got his maiden Test cap during India’s tour of Australia. Amidst the visitors’ injury concerns, Sundar, who wasn’t a first-choice player, made his Test debut at The Gabba. The venue in Brisbane is deemed as a fortress for the Aussies due to their impeccable Test record, but India managed to breach it.
The win also helped them retain the Border Gavaskar Trophy by winning the series 2-1. In the meantime, Sundar got himself a pet dog. Moreover, the youngster from Tamil Nadu named it ‘Gabba’ as he commemorated his Test debut at the renowned venue.
He uploaded a photo where he can be seen playing with his puppy. The 21-year-old captioned the adorable picture and wrote, “Love is a four-legged word. World, meet Gabba!”

Washington Sundar’s dream comes true
In the Brisbane Test, Sundar scored 62 runs and picked up three crucial wickets in the first innings. In the second innings, though he scored 22, he was able to lend Rishabh Pant adequate support. After India won the game by three wickets, Sundar called the development “a dream come true”.
“I was there for a months after the ODI series, it gave me an amazing opportunity to bowl on Australian soil and to improve my skillsets as well. Definitely have to thank the management for that. I got to know a day or two before the Gabba Test [that I was in the playing XI],” Sundar was quoted as saying to India Today.
“Definitely, the pressure was there but more than the pressure the excitement was honestly more. To be able to play Test cricket for India is a special feeling. Nothing can beat that. So, yes I was very excited to go to the ground and be a part of the Gabba Test. It went really well and it was a dream come true,” he added.
Sundar also went on to get scores of 85* and 96* against England in the four-match Test series at home. In four Tests thus far, Sundar averages 66.25 with three fifties to show for his efforts. He has also played one ODI and 31 T20Is since his debut in 2017.
