Match referee Richie Richardson arrives in Lahore for the Independence Cup
The Independence Cup will commence on September 12.
Former West Indies cricketer Sir Richie Richardson has been appointed as match referee by the International Cricket Council (ICC) for the forthcoming Independence Cup. The 55-year old arrived in Pakistan on Saturday morning. Pakistan will be hosting a global cricketing event after almost eight years.
The former Windies skipper will officiate as the match referee in the most anticipating T20 series between Pakistan and Faf du Plessis’ World XI, starting on September 12th. The three match series will take place at the Gadaffi Stadium, Lahore.
Officials announced
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) on Friday announced umpires’ names for the Independence Cup. Aleem Dar of the Elite Panel of the ICC Umpires and Ahsan Raza of the International Panel of the ICC Umpires will officiate in the series opener at the Gaddafi Stadium on September 12. Shozab Raza, also from the international panel of the ICC Umpires, will be the TV umpire.
The 2nd T20 will be umpired by Ahmed Shahab and Shozab Raza, while Ahmed Shahab will take the place of TV Umpire. Aleem Dar will attend the ICC Elite Match Officials workshop in Dubai on September 13-15, and therefore he will only mark his presence in the first of the three games.
Pakistan preparing at the Gaddafi Stadium
The Pakistan players have started their preparation for the series, while skipper du Plessis will arrive in the city on September 11. Some of the big names will take part in the series- Hashim Amla, Paul Collingwood, Darren Sammy, David Miller, Morne Morkel among many.

We have taken baby steps with this first initiative and we know that giant steps for international cricket in Pakistan will obviously follow after this historic ICC World XI visit. I would especially like to thank the ICC World XI players who have agreed for this tour. We are a very strong cricket fraternity and I am really happy that the game has won again,” former Pakistan cricketer Rameez Raza said.
