India Women’s did a phenomenal job in the recently concluded ICC Women’s World Cup. After winning four games on the bounce, they succumbed to two heavy losses but recovered in time to make it to the semifinals of the mega event where Harmanpreet Kaur scripted a memorable win. In the finals, however, India fell agonizingly short by 9 runs.

Marvelous run at the WWC by Mithali Raj & Co.

India played in their only second finals of the 8-team event. The last one was also under their skipper Mithali Raj when India qualified for the finals in 2005. After such a scintillating show in England, it was awards galore for the entire squad of India. The BCCI awarded each member of the squad with a cash reward of Rs 50 lacs a day before the finals. The awards kept pouring in as the Madhya Pradesh government announced a reward of Rs 50 lacs for the entire team. Later, Mithali Raj was promised a BMW by V Chamundeswaranath of Hyderabad. The Railways awarded a whopping sum of Rs 1.30 to 10 cricketers of the squad.

The Railways also promised a promotion of their employees Mithali Raj and Harmanpreet Kaur, both of whom enjoyed a great World Cup campaign. It was reported that the duo will be given the post of Gazetted Officers in the Railways.

Mithali receives the promotion papers

A part of the promise has already been fulfilled as Indian skipper Mithali Raj received the promotion papers on Monday. Vinod Kumar Yadav, who is the General Manager of South Central Railway, handed over the papers as Officer on Special Duty (Sports) to Mithali at the Rail Nilayam, SCR Headquarters in Secunderabad.

Mithali deserves every bit of the adulation. She has been a workhouse for India ever since she made her international debut in 1999. She will not feature in another World Cup by her own admission but has left a deep impact on young women around the country for the game of cricket.
