Mohammad Nawaz to be questioned by PCB for possible anti-corruption code breach

Pakistani all-rounder Mohammad Nawaz joined the list of players being questioned for the recent spot-fixing scandal that has hit the Pakistan cricket. Nawaz has been summoned by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) for the ‘possible’ breaches of the PCB’s anti-corruption code. The news about his involvement in anything unscrupulous in this regard has not been confirmed yet. The board refused to give away any further details on the issue.

The Pakistan cricket has been severely jolted by the spot-fixing revelations in the past. The much awaited second edition of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) had kicked off amidst such expectations. However, after just two days into the competition, the news of spot-fixing surfaced the media. A couple of players were summoned back to Pakistan for the investigations.

Since then, several names have come up in the issue and the board is leaving no stone unturned to clean out the entire corruption from the cricket in the country. They have been investigating the issue with the help of the ICC and their own Anti-Corruption unit. As a part of these investigations, Mohammad Nawaz will have to appear at the vigilance department. He will be questioned regarding his possible links to the breaches of the Pakistan’s Anti-Corruption code.

Nawaz was approached by bookmakers during the recently concluded PSL and Pakistan’s tour of Australia in 2017. The spinner failed to inform the board about being approached, Nawaz received a summon that stated as per ESPN Cricinfo, “in continuation of its fight against the menace of corruption in cricket.” The notice was issued to the all-rounder under the article 4.3 of the PCB Anti-Corruption code.

Furthermore, the board decided not to elaborate on the issue because of the “sensitivity of the matters under question. The article 4.3 comes with the provision of questioning any player to provide answers to the questions put forth by the security and the vigilance department. At present, Mohammad Nawaz is at the National Cricket Academy (NCA), Lahore where he is a part of the ongoing all-rounders camp.
