Former India batsman now turned commentator, Virender Sehwag has stated that the quality of captaincy exhibited by MS Dhoni in the semifinal of the World T20 was not up to the mark. The semifinal of the tournament saw the Indians crash out of the competition when they failed to defend their 192 runs against the firepower of the West Indies.
Virender Sehwag also pointed out that Ravichandran Ashwin, arguably one of India’s better bowlers bowled just the two overs while Hardik Pandya and Ravindra Jadeja bowled all four overs. Jadeja and Pandya were plundered for over 80 runs in the 8 overs they bowled between them.
“Ashwin bowled only two overs, and I don’t know why,” he said on Thursday (March 31). “Jadeja bowled four overs for 48 runs. Pandya gave away more than 40 runs in his four overs.
Sehwag, who believes that Ashwin is the best spinner in the world at the moment stated that it was wrong on the part of MS Dhoni not to throw the ball to Ashwin in the time of need. He also went on to endorse Ashwin’s ability to fox the batsman with the variations he possesses in addition to the off-spinner. Sehwag also stated that it was a rare bad game for Ashwin and expects the latter to come back and perform to his best once more.
“Ashwin was our main bowler and he’s the best spinner in the world at the moment. Somehow I feel, Dhoni didn’t do well when it comes to his captaincy in this game.”
“It happens with every bowler,” Sehwag pointed out. “He will go back and think where he has to improve.
“He’ll come back hard. We’ve seen that in the past with (Anil) Kumble, (Rahul) Dravid, (Sachin) Tendulkar. They also had a rough tournament and came back strongly. I’m sure he’ll come back even stronger.”
