How much will David Warner's absence impact Sunrisers Hyderabad?
David Warner will surely be missed!
The Hyderabad franchise always found it tough to find an inspirational leader. But, as and when they found one, they ensured that they turn out to be one of the most dominating sides in the league. Back in 2009, the case was very similar with the Deccan Chargers. After ending up last on the points table in 2008, Deccan Chargers managed to find an inspirational leader in Adam Gilchrist. Gilchrist’s leadership helped the team win the title in 2009.
Five years down the line, the new Hyderabad franchise Sunrisers found themselves in a similar position. Although they had some legendary captains like Kumar Sangakkara in their ranks, the franchise didn’t find much inspiration from them. An Australian yet again had to take charge to change the fortunes of the team. David Warner took charge to win the second title for the Hyderabad franchise.
David Warner – One man army for the Sunrisers
Ever since David Warner took over, he completely changed the dynamics of the team. He alongside Tom Moody brought in an aggressive Aussie flavour into the dressing room and showed the team that winning was everything. Warner led the team by example as he scored over 500 runs for the team in all the seasons since 2014.
David Warner scored 2,579 runs for the Sunrisers in just 59 games. Warner was unbelievable in the last two seasons for the team. In 2016, when Sunrisers won the title, Warner scored 848 runs in the season. This is the second highest score for an individual in IPL in a single season. He also carried his good form into 2017 as he scored 641 runs in 14 games.
Numbers do not lie and the above numbers prove why Warner is a crucial member of the SRH side. He carried the batting burden of SRH almost single-handedly in the last two seasons. Furthermore, he doubles as a lightning fast fielder and often saves some crucial runs in the field.
More than anything else, SRH will primarily miss the aggressive brand of his captaincy. He often backed the youngsters and gave them the confidence to do well. Sunrisers Hyderabad will miss Warner both as a captain as well as a batsman. It’ll be a huge loss for the side and they’ll hope that they won’t miss his presence much.
‘Your setback is the platform for your comeback’ – David Warner should believe in these words. He should try to regain the lost pride exactly where he lost it. Warner and Sunrisers will be hoping for a much stronger comeback next year.
Although SRH will miss Warner, they’ve done quite well at the auction to build a team that’ll be able to do well without him. But, Warners’s presence would have definitely made Sunrisers a formidable side in the IPL this year.
