New Zealand vs India: Chris Gayle marks his presence in Wellington on the second day
Gayle is in New Zealand for some promotional work.
On Day 2, the New Zealand bowlers were yet again on the top. They hit great areas right from the start, troubled the Indian batsmen; thus not taking too long to bowl India out. While the on-field action was nothing less than enthralling, Chris Gayle brought more joy to the fans by marking his presence in Wellington.
Right at the start of New Zealand’s first innings, the cameraman spotted the Jamaican legend. He was greeted by loud cheers from the fans as they were all thrilled to see him. If you are wondering what he is doing in New Zealand, he was there for some promotional event as informed by commentator Simon Doull. It was great to see the West Indies cricketer take some time out of his busy schedule and mark his presence at the Basin Reserve.
The story of India’s first innings
Since an entire session was washed out due to rain on the first day of this Test, it was decided that play will be extended in the second and the third sessions. India started with an overnight score of 122/5. Rishabh Pant and Ajinkya Rahane walked out into the middle to help the side get back on track. The left-hander started off positively and hit a six right in the first over of the day. However, he failed to stay on for long.
There was an ugly mix-up in the middle when Ajinkya Rahane wanted a single. It was clearly on but Rishabh Pant was reluctant and that cost him his wicket. An absolute peach from Tim Southee greeted Ravichandran Ashwin and he was dismissed on his first ball. The 31-year-old then set-up Rahane as well with some beautiful bowling. While trying to leave a ball, the batsman ended up edging one through to the keeper and was dismissed on 46.
While it seemed as if India would be bowled out for a total below 150, Mohammed Shami played some shots. He scored 21 runs before he became the last man to be dismissed. India thus was bowled out for 165 runs. Debutant Kyle Jamieson and Tim Southee picked up four wickets each as Chris Gayle watched this action keenly from the stands.
