Watch: Pakistan find raw talent in ambidextrous pacer Yasir Jan
A young teenage pace bowler, Yasir Jan, had no idea about how rare his talent is. Yasir has the ability to bowl with good pace with both his hands and it is his ambidextrous skill that is doing all the rounds in the sports world recently. Although, Yasir has not quite seen the bigger stage of the game, but his potential surely speaks volumes of his talent.
Pakistan has always been renowned for producing some of the best fast bowlers in the history of the game. From Imran Khan to Wasim Akram, from Waqar Younis to Shoaib Akhtar, from Mohammad Asif to Mohammad Amir – there has been no dearth of pace bowlers in Pakistan.
However, to have a pace bowler, who can bowl equally well with both hands, is a rarity in world cricket. While there have been players in the past and the present who have the ambidextrous skills, very few have made it big. Former England player Graham Gooch could bowl medium pace with both his arms and so could former Sri Lankan player Hashan Tillakaratne.
Yasir Jan caught the attention of the local talent hunt coaches and also of the former Pakistan player Aaqib Javed in a talent hunt recently. Jan participated in the Lahore Qalandars’ talent hunt session recently in Rawalpindi. Aaqib Javed, who is currently the head coach of the United Arab Emirates, was quick to spot his talent and quoted Jan to be a great prospect for the future.

He cited that Yasir was very raw but had the potential of becoming a ‘good bowler’ within a year if trained well. Videos of his bowling went viral on the social media platforms with the people commending his unusual skills. It is usually easier to bowl spin bowling with both hands. Ambidextrous fast bowlers are very rare. In case there are a few, they are not effective enough with both arms.
In case of Yasir Jan, he generates more pace when he bowls with his right arm. However, when he bowls with his left arm, he manages to extract a lot more bounce. How he manages to use this skill wisely, is a prospect to look out for.
