Rahul Dravid played a big hand in helping athletes at the Asian games
Swapna Burman scripted history to become the first-ever Indian Heptathlete to win a gold at the Asian Games.
Hailed as an all-time cricket great, Rahul Dravid enjoyed enormous success during his international career for India. Post-retirement, he has undertaken the task of coaching the Indian U19 team, which recently won the World Cup in New Zealand earlier this year. He also coaches the ‘A’ side and has helped out a lot of cricketers to make it to the senior side. The budding cricketers like Rishabh Pant and Hardik Pandya, currently playing Test cricket in England, have lauded Dravid for grooming them during their formative years.
Apart from cricket, Dravid has extended his support to other sports as well. He is helping athletes from rural areas with his partnership between Go Sports and Rahul Dravid Athlete Mentorship Programme, providing financial aid, in addition to the tutelage. He has always been vocal about the development of other sports as well and he is truly practising what he has been preaching for a long time.
Barman makes history at Asiad
Swapna Barman made history as she became the first-ever Indian Heptathlete to win a gold medal at the Asian games. Following her heroics, India’s gold medal tally at the Asiad stands tall at 13. Currently, they are at the eighth position after winning 22 silver and 29 bronze medals as well.
The 21-year-old, along with 19 other athletes, received financial support and guidance from the Rahul Dravid Athlete Mentorship Programme. Barman wouldn’t have made this far if it wasn’t for the programme run by the former Indian captain according to the reports in Satya Vijayi.
During his illustrious cricketing career that spanned over 16 years, Rahul Dravid amassed 13,288 runs and is the second most successful Indian batsman in Test cricket behind Sachin Tendulkar. He won 164 Test caps for India besides playing 344 ODIs where he recorded 48 centuries collectively and it was no surprise that he was known as the wall of the Indian team.
