Ramachandra Guha raises questions over appointment of Ravi Shastri

The Indian cricket team performed well under the coaching of Anil Kumble with a bevy of series wins under their belts. In spite of the side enjoying great successes in recent times, the former India skipper was not offered a contract extension. The former Indian spinner reportedly had disagreements with the Indian captain Virat Kohli. After the resignation of Anil Kumble, Ravi Shastri was handed over the role. A former member of the board, Ramachandra Guha has raised questions over the appointment of  Ravi Shastri.

Ramachandra Guha claims Shastri is inferior in character

Ramachandra Guha claims that Virat Kohli had ego issues with Anil Kumble as both of them are top cricketers. The renowned cricket historian henceforth asked why did BCCI appoint Ravi Shastri for the role. He questioned the decision saying that Shastri is inferior in character and achievement to Kohli.

“But why was he replaced by someone so strikingly inferior, in character and cricketing achievement, to the team’s captain? A person with no coaching experience besides?“Ramachandra Guha wrote in his column in Telegraph 

Nobody wanted to confront Virat Kohli

Guha further wrote that no one wanted to confront the personality of Virat Kohli so they agreed to his demands. “Only because, like the BCCI’s legal counsel and the BCCI’s CEO, the chairman of the Supreme Court-appointed Committee of Administrators surrendered his liberties and his independence when confronted by the force of Kohli’s personality. As did the so-called Cricket Selection Committee.” Guha answered questions raised by himself.

He alleged that selection committee comprising of legends like Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly, VVS Laxman selected Tom Moody over Virat Kohli as they did not want to confront authority of Indian captain.

He further added that effect of this wrong decision was not felt when India played relatively weak opposition at home.

“The unwisdom of that decision was masked when India played at home, against weak opposition. But it can no longer be concealed,” Guha wrote.
