This is the first officially built ground for the game of cricket in India, thus justifying its nickname ‘Mecca of Cricket in India. It is the third-largest cricket stadium in the world and has a capacity of 68000. Kolkata Knight Riders play their home IPL matches in this stadium.

The first-ever day-night test match in India was played here, between India and Bangladesh in 2019. It is also known as the ‘Batsman’s paradise’ due to its insanely fast outfield and short boundary distance. The highest ever score by a batsman in ODI matches was registered here, by Rohit Sharma against Sri Lanka, who racked up 264 runs off 173 balls. It hosted the infamous semi-finals of the 1996 world cup, in which the match was awarded to Sri Lanka after the crowd rioted and caused disturbances as India was about to lose the game.

The iconic Test match (Border-Gavaskar trophy 2000-2001) between India and Australia was played here, in which Rahul Dravid and VVS Laxman batted throughout day four, generating a 376 run stand, after being forced to follow on and helped India to win the match.
