Rohit Sharma says that there is no point in fretting over his start-stop Test career

There are very few players in this world who can perform well in all three formats. There are players who play only one format as they feel that they can give their maximum by focusing only on one format. Test cricket is demanding and requires players to work on their techniques as only technically sound players can excel in this format. This is why test cricket is the real form of the game and players cannot get away with rash shots in this format.

Rohit Sharma has been the standout opener for India in the limited overs format. From the time he has turned as an opener, he has been the impact player for India and has piled runs at a very good strike rate. However, Rohit has not done well in red ball cricket. He has been in and out of the team for a long time and his test records are also not up to his standards. The swashbuckling opener feels that there is no point in thinking about his test record as “half” of his playing days are over.

Contrasting form

“There’s a limited time you have as a player and I have finished almost half of it. There’s no point in spending the remaining half thinking whether I’ll be picked or not. I am going forward with the theory of ‘whatever time I have made it count.” Rohit was quoted as saying by sportskeeda.com. He has played 25 tests matches and scored just 1479 runs at an average of 39.97. This is well below par for Rohit and it is not enough to cement his place in the test team.

India is set to play a one-off test against Afghanistan in June and Rohit has been excluded from the squad. However, he does not complain about his selection and wants to do well in whatever opportunities that come his way. “For me, I am not at a stage to worry about whether I’ll be picked or not. I need to enjoy my game. The first five-six years of my career, it was all about ‘oh, will I be picked? Will I play’! Now it’s all about enjoying the game. These things keep adding pressure on you. Instead, it’s best to enjoy yourself in what you do and give your best,” he added.

The flamboyant opener had a poor IPL with Mumbai Indians. He failed to make an impact for the franchise and his team too failed to qualify for the playoffs. The squad was better than what the results display. But the season is over and it is time to move on.

Rohit refused to buy the theory that he is a white ball specialist. He still has the hunger to play red ball cricket and will do best of the chances that come his way.
