Rohit Sharma should be India's captain for the next two T20 World Cups: Sunil Gavaskar
Sunil Gavaskar added that a team would not like to have too many captaincy changes with two back-to-back T20 World Cups lined up.
Legendary Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar feels that Mumbai Indians’ (MI) skipper Rohit Sharma should replace Virat Kohli as the captain of the Indian side for the upcoming T20 World Cup that will take place in the months of October and November.
Adding that a team would not like to have too many captaincy changes with two back-to-back World Cups lined up, Gavaskar opined that Sharma would surely be his choice of captaincy for the Indian side for both World Cups.
“I think Rohit Sharma (as captain) for the next two World Cups. You could say they (World Cups) are back-to-back, one starting in a month and another exactly a year from now. So clearly, yes, you don’t want to change too many captains at this particular stage. Rohit Sharma would definitely be my choice for captaincy of the Indian team for both these T20 World Cups,” said Sunil Gavaskar on the show Cricket Connected.
Rohit Sharma has a stellar record as captain in IPL cricket
Rohit Sharma will qualify as one of the greatest captains in the history of the Indian Premier League (IPL). The 34-year-old has led the Mumbai Indians (MI) side to a whopping 5 IPL titles, the most by any captain in the history of the league.
On the other hand, India’s current skipper Virat Kohli has not managed to lead the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) side to even a single IPL trophy.
Sharma is also one of the most prolific run-scorers in IPL history. The right-hander is currently the third-highest run-scorer in the tournament and has amassed a colossal 5564 runs with the willow, at an average of 31.43 and a strike rate in excess of 130. The ‘Hitman’ has also plundered a hundred and 40 fifties in IPL history.
Even in T20Is, Sharma is one of the most successful batsmen. The Indian opening batsman is currently the third-highest run-scorer in T20I cricket and has amassed 2864 runs at an average of 32.54. He has also scored a whopping 4 centuries in T20Is as well.
