SA vs IND: Why are South African players wearing black armbands?

The hugely awaited Boxing Day Test match between South Africa and India will get underway at the SuperSport Park in Centurion on 26th December 2021. And, the South African players were seen wearing black armbands on Day 1 of the 1st Test.

And, that is because the archbishop of South Africa, Desmond Tutu passed away on 26th December 2021. The 90-year-old played a key role in abolishing apartheid in South Africa and was awarded the Nobel peace prize in the year 1984.

Tutu had fought for the oppressed throughout his life, and as a mark of respect, the Protean cricketers have worn black armbands.

India opt to bat in the first Test against South Africa

Indian skipper Virat Kohli won the toss and decided that his side will get the willows out. The 33-year-old felt that runs on the board first up, especially when the Indian side is playing away from home will work to India’s advantage.

Kohli also admitted that the South African side is a strong one, and added that South Africa is a challenging place to play cricket. Veterans Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane have found a place in the playing XI, which means that the likes of Shreyas Iyer and Hanuma Vihari will have to wait for their turn.

“We will bat first. Runs on the board playing away home has been our strength. The pitch tends to quicken up here on Day 2-3. Our success away from home started from the series we played here last time. Very challenging place to play. South African unit is always strong and they know the conditions. The prep has been wonderful. Quite lucky to get the centre-wicket for practice,” said Virat Kohli after winning the toss.
