Shaun Marsh breaches Cricket Australia’s new regulations
Shaun Marsh breaches Cricket Australia’s new regulations: The unfortunate death of Phillip Hughes last year raised several questions about player’s safety in cricket and betterment of safety standards. The protection provided by helmets had also become a subject of strong debate in the cricketing fraternity for a long period of time.
In the wake of this tragic event, the Cricket Australia (CA) brought into force the new “State Equipment and Apparel Regulations.” It was notified by Cricket Australia that the players will have to abide this rule from the 2015-16 summer.
The new regulation came into force as a result of the International Cricket Council directive for member countries to adopt the British Standard as the new standard for helmets, and CA had informed their players in August that the rule would be applied from the latest season.
The umpires have been carrying out constant checks in the on-going Matador cup and Shaun Marsh failed to comply with the new regulation and was promptly reprimanded by Stephen Bernard, the match referee.
A Cricket Australia official said in a statement, “the helmet fell foul of the new regulation, introduced on October 1, which requires “all Australian and state-contracted players to wear a helmet compliant with the British Standard – BS7928:2013 ‘Specification for head protectors for cricketers’.”
Players were also informed that they would be provided with the new compliant helmet in case their manufacture doesn’t manage to provide them with the helmets.
Shaun Marsh made a century for Western Australia against South Australia but for a losing cause in the opening round of the Matador cup. However, his efforts were ruined by Travis Head, who scored a scintillating double hundred to chase the total of 350 in 50 overs set by Western Australia.
