Shikhar Dhawan wishes Praveen Kumar for post-retirement journey
Kumar will now focus on a career in coaching.
India’s opening batsman Shikhar Dhawan took to social media to share a thoughtful message as his teammate Praveen Kumar announced his retirement from all forms of the game. A few days ago, Kumar had announced that he would be calling it a day from playing cricket, but will, however, shift his focus to a career in coaching. The veteran seam bowler had donned the India jersey in over 80 international matches, finishing with 112 international wickets.
The paceman had made his debut for India in November 2007 in an ODI against Pakistan. The 32-year-old last played an international fixture in 2012. Although he will no longer be playing competitive cricket, he revealed that he will only turn out for ONGC in company cricket.
Despite his natural ability to swing the ball and his knack of picking up wickets, he didn’t get too many opportunities to represent India in Tests, playing the longest format only 6 times. However, during the span of his Test career, he bagged 27 wickets at a healthy average of 25.81.
Praveen Kumar’s career highlights
In Test cricket, Praveen Kumar enjoyed a particularly successful series against England back in 2011, although India were humiliated 0-4. However, Praveen was left out of the Test side for some strange reason thereafter and never got another opportunity to make it back into the team.
Although his Test career was curtailed, he enjoyed a lot of success in the 50-over format. Some of his most memorable performances for India came during his span of 68 ODIs, where he picked up a total of 77 wickets. He finished with career-best figures of 4 for 31. PK claimed a four-wicket haul in the second final of the 2008 CB Series against Australia, bowling India to an emphatic series win against the mighty hosts Down Under.
Shikhar Dhawan‘s thoughtful message read, “You have certainly had a great feat so far! Hats off to your fantastic journey and best wishes for your future endeavors.”
