‘Sign me up’ – Dale Steyn cheekily expresses desire of becoming India’s bowling coach
Dale Steyn retired from all forms of cricket earlier this year.
Former South African speedster Dale Steyn has expressed the desire of serving the Indian team as a bowling coach. The 38-year-old was a force to reckon with during his playing days and his record is also nothing short of staggering. Be it taking wickets in Test matches or restricting scoring rate in middle overs, Steyn performed every role with brilliance. Hence, his addition to the Indian coaching staff would certainly benefit the bowling unit.
For the unversed, India’s coaching staff is set to undergo a revamp after the upcoming T20 World Cup 2021. India’s current bowling coach Bharat Arun isn’t likely to fetch a new contract, as per reports at least. Hence, the Indian board is set to hire a person for the job.
Dale Steyn has a message for MS Dhoni
Owing to the same, Steyn has cheekily put his hand up. The Proteas legend expressed his desire while reacting to an Instagram post from ESPNcricinfo. The post read: “If you are on the phone with MS Dhoni, what would you tell him?’ Responding to this Steyn commented: “Sign me up as bowling coach (eye-wink emoji) haha.”
The comment went viral in no time as Indian fans were delighted to see Steyn’s wish to associate with Indian cricket. Although the ‘haha’ in the comment indicates Steyn goofily made the post, his words were taken pretty seriously by fans. Steyn, who bid adieu to the game earlier this year, is a popular figure in India owing to his heroics in the Indian Premier League (IPL) and international cricket.
He’s also known to share a great camaraderie with several Indian players. Hence, it would be interesting to see if one ever gets to see him in Team India’s support staff. Notably, Dhoni has been roped in as India’s mentor for the upcoming T20 World Cup 2021. Hence, it was wise of Steyn to give the message to the wicket-keeper batter.
Meanwhile, Paras Mhambrey has reportedly been appointed as India’s bowling coach while Rahul Dravid is set to become Shastri’s successor. However, any official announcement behind this development is yet to come. Meanwhile, India will kick-start their T20 World Cup campaign against arch-rivals Pakistan on October 24.
