After a poor outing with the bat in the third Test at Holkar Cricket Stadium in Indore, India needed a strong start with the ball. They eventually got that, with Ravindra Jadeja dismissing Travis Head for nine runs. However, the Rohit Sharma-led side could not capitalise on that as they could have given Australia another blow in the fourth over of the innings. However, Jadeja’s no-ball gave Marnus Labuschagne a lifeline.

Notably, this was Jadeja’s second no-ball in the match and Sunil Gavaskar, who was on air at that time, was furious seeing that. India head coach Rahul Dravid too looked disappointed as Labuschagne was able to build a strong partnership with opener Usman Khawaja. However, Labuschagne (31) could not stay for too long as Jadeja eventually managed to dismiss him.

India’s middle-order fails to deliver again

The team management on Wednesday (March 1) took a bold call by dropping KL Rahul, replacing him with Shubman Gill. However, the 23-year-old could not step up and deliver. But the heat is more now on Cheteshwar Pujara, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer and KS Bharat, who once again failed to live up to the expectations.

Even though Kohli managed to finish as the top-scorer for India in the first innings, he was unable to convert his start, while Pujara looked pale yet again. Iyer, ever since his return from injury, has not made the most of the opportunities while Bharat is yet to prove himself with the bat in international cricket.

Overall, India’s middle order hasn’t fired so far in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy but it needs to as India are in a difficult spot at the end of Day 1. Meanwhile, the Steve Smith-led side are currently leading by 47 runs and if they manage to start well on Day 2, it will be very difficult for India to script a comeback.
