South Africa continued their dominant run in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 as they hammered Bangladesh by 149 runs in Match 23 on Tuesday, October 24 at Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai. Chasing a massive target of 383 to win, Bangladesh’s chase never got going as they were left reeling at 81/6 after 22 overs. Mahmudullah was the lone warrior for his side as he scored a scintillating hundred playing an incredible knock of 111 (111) with the help of 11 fours and four sixes.

Despite his valiant innings, Bangladesh were bundled out for 233 in 46.4 overs as Gerald Coetzee once again finished as the pick of the bowlers with figures of 3/62 in ten overs. Earlier in the day, captain Aiden Markram won the toss and elected to bat first, Bangladesh started off well by dismissing Reeza Hendricks (12 off 19) and Rassie van der Dussen (1 off 7) and left South Africa on 36/2 after 7.5 overs.

Seeing their team in trouble, Quinton de Kock and captain Markram added 131 runs for the third wicket off 137 balls. Their partnership was broken by Shakib Al Hasan who dismissed Markram on 60 (69). However, De Kock continued from the other end and went on to score his third hundred of the tournament with a record-shattering innings of 174 off 140 balls clobbering 15 fours and seven sixes. Notably, it is the highest individual score by a wicketkeeper batter in the history of the men’s ODI World Cup as he left behind Adam Gilchrist’s knock of 149 (104) in the 2007 World Cup final.

Heinrich Klaasen continues his sensational form

During his innings, he also became the leading run scorer in the tournament so far with 407 runs to his name from five innings at an average of 81.40 and a strike rate of 114.97 with three fifties to his name. Apart from him, Heinrich Klaasen also continued his brilliant form as he played another breathtaking innings of 90 (49) to help South Africa post a massive total of 382/5 in their allotted 50 overs.
