SA20 2024: Keshav Maharaj confirmed as Durban Super Giants' new skipper
Durban Super Giants finished fifth place in the group stage of the SA20 2023 season.
The 2024 edition of the SA20 league is right on the horizon. With the tournament scheduled to begin in January 2024, the franchises have started gearing up to prepare their squads for the tournament. Recently, a few of them also announced their retentions for the upcoming edition.
Stars like Faf du Plessis, Gerald Coetzee, Moeen Ali, Rashid Khan, and many more will once again feature in the competition, and the fans could be in for a plethora of cracking matches over the course of the proceedings.
However, in major news, Durban Super Giants recently came forward to make a big change in their leadership as South African cricketer Keshav Maharaj was announced as the new skipper of the side for the upcoming edition of the tournament.
The side sacked veteran South African batter Quinton de Kock as their skipper, and now Maharaj will be taking charge in the forthcoming edition of the competition. Taking to Twitter, Durban Super Giants announced the appointment, writing, "Durban, presenting your new skipper!"
Durban Super Giants missed out on playoff spot in previous season
Durban Super Giants had a subpar season in the SA20 in 2023. The side failed to make it to the playoff stages of the tournament as they finished in fifth place in the group stages.
Playing ten matches in the group stages, Durban ended up with 19 points to their name, winning four matches and losing five. With the various teams announcing their retentions for the competition, Super Giants named Quinton de Kock, Prenelan Subrayen, Kyle Mayers, Naveen-ul-Haq, Bhanuka Rajapaksa, and Reece Topley as the players that they retained.
With the pre-signings for the competition done, the six franchises have until July 31 to trade the local South African players, retain overseas players, and even buy out cricketers. Furthermore, the bought-out players will then be moved to take part in the tournament’s auction. The SA20 2024 season will also see an additional match added in the knockout stages, which will be quite similar to that of the IPL.
