Watch: English crowd at Headingley jeers and mocks Australian stumper-batter Alex Carey with hilarious chants as he enters pitch in third Ashes Test
Alex Carey scored only 8 runs off 16 balls in Australia's first innings in Headingley Test.
It has been a gripping third Ashes Test so far, with both Australia and England getting wrapped in their first innings within a day each. However, when the Headingley game was about to start, there was much noise about how the crowds are going to back the home side. Moreover, how they will treat Australian players when they take the field with the aim of sealing the coveted Ashes 2023 series. Interestingly, there was the buzz initially that the English crowd maintained decorum, unlike the Lord's spectators.
In the same vein, during Australia's first innings, post the dismissal of the visiting skipper, Pat Cummins, Alex Carey, the talented stumper-batter made a walk to the crease. The moment he stepped out of the pavilion, the crowd at Headingly started booing him. That was not all. Furthermore, they started a hilarious chant for the Australian after Carey came onto the pitch. Notably, the Aussie had stumped Jonny Bairstow in a controversial manner which triggered English fans to target him.
"Shoes off if you hate Carey," the crowd chanted loudly.
Notably, during the act, some English spectators even took off their shoes and raised them in the air while pointing towards Alex Carey. Meanwhile, Carey did not have the best of starts to his innings as soon after he was dropped by the England veteran Joe Root while he was batting on just five runs. Despite getting another chance, the Australian could not make the most of it as the batting unit collapsed like a deck of cards. The visitors were 240/5 at one stage but within 23 runs they lost five wickets. As a result, Australia got folded for 263 in their first innings.
Pat Cummins led from the front with his 6-wicket haul to gain slight lead over England
Now speaking of England's batting, things did not go well for them as well as they kept losing wickets at regular intervals. While at stumps, England were 68/3 on Day 1. But on just the second ball of the day, Cummins sent Joe Root back to the hut to give Australia a great start. Thereafter, except captain Ben Stokes, no other batter could resist the Australian bowling. This meant that Stokes (80 off 108 balls) yet again showed his love affair with Headingley and took his side close to the visitors' first innings total before handing his wicket to the Ashes debutant, Todd Murphy.
As a result, England were bowled out for 237 runs with Pat Cummins finishing with 6/91. While Australia were hoping to gain an upper hand in their second innings with a strong start. But opener David Warner's deja vu continued as he got dismissed by pacer Stuart Broad for the 17th time. Currently, Australia are 72/3 after 28.2 overs as they lead England by 98 runs.
