Mumbai Indians won the match by four wickets with 21 balls to spare.
The inaugural edition of the Women’s Premier League is heading towards an exciting finish with just three matches left in the competition. The action continued in the tournament as Royal Challengers Bangalore and Mumbai Indians locked horns in their respective last matches of the league stage on Tuesday, March 21 at Dr. DY Patil Sports Academy in Navi Mumbai.
Mumbai Indians captain Harmanpreet Kaur won the toss and invited RCB to bat first. The game held tremendous importance for Mumbai as they had to win the match to have a chance to finish at the top of the points table. On the other hand, RCB had nothing to lose, having already been knocked out of the tournament and were playing for their pride.
Bangalore started off miserably in the innings as they lost the dangerous Sophie Devine for a duck in the first over itself. Captain Smriti Mandhana tried to stabilize the innings but couldn’t take her innings past 24 as she once again fell prey to a spinner. She finished her forgettable WPL campaign without a single half-century to her name.
Ellyse Perry took the innings ahead by forming small partnerships with Heather Knight and Kanika Ahuja but failed to get going in her innings. She was dismissed for 29 off 38 balls getting trapped in front by Nat Sciver Brunt.
A quick-fire knock by Richa Ghosh of 29 off 13 took her side to 125/9 in their allotted 20 overs. Amelia Kerr was the pick of the bowlers for Mumbai as she picked 3/22 in four overs while Nat Sciver Brunt and Issy Wong also picked up two wickets each.
Mumbai regained the top spot in the points table
In reply, Mumbai got off to a great start with openers Hayley Matthews and Yastika Bhatia adding 53 runs for the first wicket in six overs. RCB bowlers made a fight back as they picked four wickets in 20 balls to leave MI reeling at 73/4 in 9.1 overs. Amelia Kerr and Pooja Vasktrakar took their team to safe shores with their 47-run stand for the fifth wicket in 40 balls. Kanika Ahuja picked two quick wickets off consecutive balls in the 16th over but it was too late as Mumbai only needed six runs to win.
Amelia Kerr's brilliant knock of 31* off 27 balls took Mumbai home as they won the match by four wickets and 21 balls to spare. With this win, Mumbai regained their top spot in the points table and finished the league stage on a high. However, Delhi Capitals can dethrone Mumbai with their win in their last league game and bag a direct entry into the final.
