Coming on the back of a devastating loss at the hands of the hosts, India returned for the second T20I of the five-match series on Sunday, July 07. The encounter was hosted at the same venue — the Harare Sports Club, and as suggested by the Indian skipper Shubman Gill at the toss, there wasn't much change in the surface. However, what changed was the intent, as this time Abhishek Sharma started with a totally different mindset.

One of the anchors from the first fixture, Gill, departed early this time round. However, Abhishek was joined by Ruturaj Gaikwad, and the duo didn't call for any discomfort during their stay at the crease. The southpaw opened his account in T20Is with a six, becoming the third Indian to do so, joining the elite list which includes Suryakumar Yadav and Tilak Varma.

Despite a slumbering start in the powerplay, Abhishek took the matters in his own hands, reaching his maiden half-century in 33 balls. The Punjab-born was in no mood to settle down, as he went in to double his first-ever fifty into a three-figure mark, getting there off just 46 balls. Abhishek was dismissed on the very next ball, which is when Ruturaj shifted gears to pair alongside Rinku Singh, who came at 4.

Rinku was expected to contribute with a cameo, but did much better with his 22-ball 48*, while the Maharashtra batter remained unbeaten at 77 off 47. The couple put up an 87-run partnership, posting 234/2 at the end of 20 overs. Blessing Muzarabani and Wellington Masakadza shared the two wickets, and the former also bowled a maiden in his four-over spell.

When it came to defend the target, Gill's bowlers breathed fire right from the first ball, as Mukesh Kumar ran through Innocent Kaia's defence on the third ball of the innings. Brian Bennett was the next to follow, as he too became Mukesh's second victim in the match. The Indore-born speedster Avesh Khan too joined the party, scalping two big wickets including that off the opposition skipper Raza in his first over, courtesy of which the scoreboard read 58/4 after the powerplay.

The shocker given by the Indians never allowed for a recovery to the Zimbabwean side, although a determined Wessly Madhevere tried to keep the scoreboard ticking. Disallowing the chasing side to free their arms, the Indian spinners bowled tight line and lengths during the middle phases, tightening their grip on the match. Midway through the chase, Raza saw half the men returning to the crease, and 163 runs were yet to be achieved.

Boundaries were rare in the second innings, inflicted by an excellent bowling display by the tourists. In the last five overs, Zimbabwe needed a seemingly unachievable 130 runs with three wickets in hand. Madhevere soon went They could only add 30 more runs though, as Mukesh Kumar got the better of Luke Jongwe in the 19th over itself, handing the Men in Blue a superb comeback victory in the second encounter.

The series is now levelled 1-1, as the third game will allow Zimbabwe to return to their best. However, Shubman Gill, who registered his first win as Indian captain in the game, will now exhibit a great deal of confidence within the line-up to build a winning streak.

Just like the first game, the social media flooded rib-tickling memes on this game too, reacting hilariously on the Sunday fixture.
