Soumya Sarkar could face 3 years in jail for using deerskin in his wedding

Bangladesh’s top-order batsman, Soumya Sarkar may face three years of imprisonment if he is found guilty of using deerskin in his wedding which took place recently. Sarkar has been one of the finest cricketers Bangladesh has ever produced and in case he is punished, he may miss the 2020 T20 World Cup which is scheduled to happen later this year.

The left-handed batsman who shone in the series against Zimbabwe was in the news for his wedding. As per the reports, two people were arrested for stealing smartphones during the wedding of Sarkar and his long-time girlfriend, Priyonti Debnath Puja. Also, the sources suggest that a fight had broken out at the event.

As reported by Republic World, Soumya Sarkar and his father, Kishori Mohan Sarker may be handed three years of jail for their alleged deerskin possession. According to section 6 of the Wildlife Conservation Act, a person who possesses animal or wildlife skin without a license may be subject to a prison sentence of 3 years or more.

The cricketer’s father mentioned in his recent interview that it was a part of the family tradition hence, they did nothing but just followed the traditions. The swashbuckling opener was in good form against Zimbabwe and everything seemed to be going excellent for him when he got hitched to his long-time girlfriend, however, these controversies will have a negative impact on Soumya’s concentration as he will be more focused to get himself out of the troubles first.

Since the all-rounder is not a part of IPL 2020, he is likely to stay in Bangladesh and deal with these issues. The possession of deerskin is a very social problem and it is possible that this move may draw the ire of the media as well as the general public towards him.

Talking about his recent form, Sarkar played a fantastic inning of 62 runs in the first T20I against Zimbabwe which helped Bangladesh to win the T20I series 2-0. If Sarkar is found guilty, it will be interesting to see how the Bangladesh Cricket Board reacts because he is one of the most important players of the team.
