South Africa managed to bury the ghosts of the Test series, coming out firing on all cylinders in the opening ODI at the Newlands in Cape Town. The Proteas won by seven wickets and took a 1-0 lead in the three-match series, chasing down 259 with 14 balls to spare. The hosts will now be desperately aiming to pocket the series in the second ODI on Friday, February 7 at the Kingsmead in Durban.

For the Brits, the game is a must-win affair to stay alive in the series. South Africa have a decent record in Durban, having won seven of their last eight ODIs. Moreover, at home, they have beaten the Three Lions the last four times. The visitors don’t have quite a few of their key players, including Jofra Archer and Jos Buttler. Coming back and drawing level in the series won’t be an easy task.

Pitch and Conditions

22 out of the 40 result-oriented games were won by the team, batting first. The chasing teams have also tasted success, winning 18. The pitch is expected to be an excellent one for batting. Since January 2011, the average score in Durban has been 272. There are chances of rain throughout game-time, especially from 7 pm onwards. The temperature will be around 25 degrees Celsius.

Team Combination

South Africa

The hosts may not wish to tinker with their winning combination. De Kock had a memorable outing in his very first game as the Proteas ODI skipper, scoring a century. Though Bavuma missed out on a century, getting out on 98, he was appreciated. Van der Dussen showed a great amount of maturity.

Reeza Hendricks will be wanting to make amends after missing out last time. In bowling, Tabraiz Shamsi looked in great rhythm at the Newlands, getting three wickets at an economy of 3.80. JJ Smuts was also economical. Beuran Hendricks and Ngidi need to make inroads with the new ball.

Probable XI

Quinton de Kock (C & WK), Reeza Hendricks, Temba Bavuma, Rassie van der Dussen, JJ Smuts, David Miller, Andile Phehlukwayo, Beuran Hendricks, Lungi Ngidi, Lutho Sipamla, Tabraiz Shamsi

England

The Brits may resort to a few changes after the defeat. Leg-spinner Matthew Parkinson didn’t look much penetrative and Adil Rashid could replace him. Sam Curran faltered with the bat and was trusted only for five overs with the ball. Joe Root, interestingly, rolled his arms over for seven overs.

Joe Denly turned up with 87 while batting, but was England’s most expensive bowler on the day with his off-breaks. Chris Woakes looked in great rhythm with an economy of four. The Three Lions top and middle-order, consisting of Roy, Bairstow, Root and Morgan, has to be on top of their game.

Probable XI

Jason Roy, Jonny Bairstow (wk), Joe Root, Eoin Morgan (C), Joe Denly, Tom Banton, Sam Curran/Moeen Ali, Chris Woakes, Tom Curran, Chris Jordan, Adil Rashid
