South Africa managed to turn the tables on England in the opening ODI at the at the Newlands in Cape Town. Quinton de Kock shone on his maiden ODI as the skipper, winning by seven wickets. The hosts had a chance of gaining an unassailable lead in the second game at the Kingsmead in Durban. However, rain played hide and seek and the contest had to be called off after 11.2 overs of cricket.

It also meant that the Three Lions can’t win the series anymore and only have a chance of drawing level. The third ODI is set to be played on Sunday, February 9 at the New Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg. It’s a pink ODI for breast cancer awareness and the Proteas have emerged victorious in five out of six games. Overall, South Africa have won 26 out of 35 matches at the iconic venue.

Pitch and Conditions

28 out of the 48 matches have been won by the chasing teams at the Wanderers. The pitch has been an excellent one for batting with the average score being 294 since January 2011. The 400-run mark has also been breached twice at the very venue. There are chances of rain with clouds hovering over the venue. The temperature will be around 24 degrees Celsius with the humidity in the 60s and 70s.

The Proteas may not make any changes from the last game. De Kock started well in Cape Town, but got out to Joe Root next time around. Reeza Hendricks managed to get his form back, scoring 35* in Durban. Temba Bavuma was unlucky to miss out on a ton in the opener and looked in the last game.

Rassie van der Dussen churned out a well-compiled knock at the Newlands. The rest of the batting unit hasn’t had a hit thus far. Left-arm spinner Bjorn Fortuin made his debut in the previous match, but didn’t get a chance of bowl. Tabraiz Shamsi is in good rhythm with his chinaman bowling.

The England batting has depth with even Chris Jordan, having decent abilities in the lower order. Jason Roy and Jonny Bairstow need to take the Brits off to a flying start. Joe Root missed out last time, but has impressed with his part-time off-breaks. In fact, he has also bowled in the powerplay.

Joe Denly is in good shape, scoring 87. The onus will also be on Morgan and the young Tom Banton to deliver. In bowling, Matthew Parkinson has had a tough time in the 10.4 overs he has bowled. Jordan and Chris Woakes have a couple of wickets each. Woakes also scored 40 in Cape Town.
