Pakistan recorded their first win on the tour of South Africa as they got better of the hosts in the first ODI of the 5-match series hosted by the St George’s Park. The home team could only end up with 266/2 in their 50 overs despite an unbeaten 108 from Hashim Amla and 93 by debutant Rassie van der Dussen. Pakistan got off to a good start with their top three contributing in the chase. Imam-ul-Haq anchored the innings with a 101-ball 86 while it was Mohammad Hafeez who finished off with an unbeaten 63-ball 71.

A record win for Pakistan:
0 – Pakistan remains unbeaten at Port Elizabeth in the ODI format. They’ve played five ODIs at this venue winning four of those while another game ended without a result.
4 – Pakistan is only the 4th team to win an ODI despite picking two or fewer wickets while bowling first. New Zealand defeated Sri Lanka who lost only one wicket in a 23 overs-a-side game in 2013. Windies in the 1992 Melbourne ODI against Pakistan and South Africa in the 2004 Johannesburg ODI won despite picking only two wickets during the first innings.
267 – The 267-run chase in this game is Pakistan’s highest successful run-chase in ODI cricket against South Africa in South Africa. Their previous highest was 235 during the 2013 Durban ODI.
Overall, this is Pakistan’s 2nd highest successful ODI chase in South Africa after the 300-run chase against Sri Lanka during the 1998 Kimberly ODI.
Amla moves ahead of Virat:
167 – Innings Hashim Amla needed to score his 27th century in ODI cricket. He is the 5th player to score 27 and more ODI tons but the quickest to get to this ton. Virat Kohli was the previous quickest to 27 ODI centuries as he needed 169 innings.

Rassie joins record books:
1 – Rassie van der Dussen became the first player to score fifty and more on ODI and T20I debut. The South African made 56 on his T20I debut during last year’s T20I against Zimbabwe in East London.
4 – Rassie van der Dussen became the 4th player to be dismissed in the 90s on ODI debut. Eoin Morgan during his ODI debut in 2006, was dismissed on 99 while Phil Jacques in 2006 and Stephen Fleming in 1994 were dismissed on 94 and 90 respectively on their ODI debut. UAE’s Swapnil Patil remained unbeaten on 99 during his ODI debut in 2014 against Scotland.
93 – Van der Dussen’s 93 is the 4th highest score on ODI debut for South Africa. Colin Ingram (124), Temba Bavuma (113) and Reeza Hendricks (102) scored centuries on their respective ODI debuts.
Poor batting display by the Saffers:
266/2 – South Africa’s total of 266/2 is the 2nd lowest ODI total in a completed innings where a team batted 50+ overs losing only two or fewer wickets. Pakistan’s 220/2 against Windies in the 1992 Melbourne ODI is the lowest in this case.
1994 – The last instance when a team scored less than South Africa’s 266/2 for the loss of 3 or fewer wickets in an ODI was recorded way back in 1994. Australia posted 254/3 in their 50 overs during the 1994 Hobart ODI against Zimbabwe.
A rare ODI ton for Amla:
1 – This century was Hashim Amla’s 21st ODIs while batting first but the first to end on the losing side. South Africa ended up as the winners during each of his previous 20 ODI hundreds while batting first. No other player scored more tons in a winning cause while batting first in ODI cricket.
Amla’s previous highest score while batting first in a losing cause was only 77. He has scored six centuries in ODI chases with four of them resulting in wins and other two in defeats.
120 – Number of balls Hashim Amla faced in this match; the fewest by an opener remaining unbeaten while batting first in an ODI. (Batting full 50 overs) The previous lowest was 126 balls also by Amla during the 2010 Dubai ODI also against Pakistan that they won by a 1-run margin.
