West Indies began their tour of Sri Lanka with a close defeat as the hosts took a 1-0 lead in the 3-match ODI series with a 1-run victory. Shai Hope continued his good run in ODI cricket in Asia as he anchored the West Indies’ innings with a 140-ball 115. The last 20 balls of the innings fetched 49 runs to help the visitors finish on 289/7. The Lankan chase began with both openers scoring fifties before they lost the wickets in the middle overs. Thisara Perera’s quick-fire 32 and Wanindu Hasaranga’s unbeaten 39-ball 42 helped Sri Lanka to seal the chase with 5 balls to spare.

A big chase for Sri Lanka:
290 – The 290-run chase by Sri Lanka is now their 2nd highest successful run-chase at home. Their highest is 311 against Zimbabwe in the 2017 Hambantota ODI. Zimbabwe’s 317-run chase in the 2017 Galle ODI is the only other successful ODI chase of 290+ in Sri Lanka.
290 – This is also the 2nd highest successful chase for Sri Lanka against West Indies in ODI cricket. Their highest successful chase against West Indies is 313 during the 2003 Bridgetown ODI.
A rare 1-wicket win for the Lankans:
4 – This is only the 4th instance of Sri Lanka winning an ODI match by a 1-wicket margin. Other three instances are: vs England in 1999 Adelaide ODI, vs Australia in 2010 Melbourne ODI and vs West Indies in the 2015 Colombo-RPS ODI.
This was the 10th instance of West Indies losing an ODI by a 1-wicket margin. The 2015 Colombo ODI defeat is the other such defeat for the Caribbean team since the start of 2012.
West Indies’ misery in Sri Lanka:
8 – West Indies now have spent 8 consecutive ODI matches without a win on Sri Lankan soil. They also lost each of their last six ODI matches in Sri Lanka. West Indies’ last ODI win in Sri Lanka came way back in 2005 against Sri Lanka by 33 runs.
289/7 – The total of 289/7 by West Indies in this game is their highest ODI total on Sri Lankan soil. Their previous highest ODI total in Sri Lanka was 261/6. West Indies previous highest ODI total in Sri Lanka against the hosts is 251/10 in 2011 also during an ODI hosted by Colombo’s SSC.
A record knock by Shai Hope:
6 – Shai Hope now has six centuries in the ODI format in Asia; the joint 2nd most ODI hundreds for West Indies in Asia. Chris Gayle scored eight ODI hundreds in this continent while Marlon Samuels also scored six ODI tons.
8 – Shai Hope is now the first West Indies keeper and one of the 8th wicketkeepers overall to score a century and affect four dismissals in an ODI match. The last of the previous seven to do this double was Dinesh Chandimal against Ireland in 2016 Dublin ODI.
115 – Hope’s 115-run knock is now the highest individual ODI score for West Indies in Sri Lanka. The previous highest ODI score for West Indies on the Sri Lankan soil was 113 by Adrian Barath in 2011 also during an ODI hosted by Colombo-SSC. Overall, this was the 4th ODI hundred for West Indies in Sri Lanka with three of them coming at the Colombo’s SSC Ground.
Hope @ 1000 runs in Asia:
15 – Shai Hope completed 1000 ODI runs in Asia in only 15 ODI innings making him the fastest player to the milestone. The previous quickest to 1000 ODI runs in Asia was Babar Azam in 17 innings. Hope was only two runs away from 1000 ODI runs in the Asian continent.
Yet another win for Sri Lanka at home:
5 – Sri Lanka now have won each of their last five ODI matches at home; their longest winning streak in home ODIs since the start of 2006. They won nine ODIs in a row they played at home between 2004 and 2005.
