Stats: Chris Gayle completes 10000 runs in ODI cricket

Chris Gayle has turned consistent for the Windies ever since announcing his decision to retire from the ODI format after the 2019 Cricket World Cup. The veteran batsman scored two centuries in the series against England with over 300 runs to his name. Gayle eased through to a 97-ball 162 with 11 fours and 14 maximums in the 4th ODI. The Windies opener joined the elite club of players with 10000 runs and completed many more milestones in the ODI format.

2 – Gayle became only the 2nd player from the Windies to aggregate 10,000 runs in ODI cricket. Brian Lara was the first from the Caribbean Islands to reach this milestone. Overall, Gayle is the 14th player to score 10000 ODI runs.

He also completed 10000 runs in this format for the Windies having scored 55 runs while representing the ICC World XI.


2 – Among the 14 players with 10k ODI runs, only two players have scored their 10000th ODI run by hitting a six. Ricky Ponting did it during the 2007 World Cup game against South Africa while Gayle did it with his 500th six across all formats on Wednesday. Sanath Jayasuriya got to this milestone by hitting a four.


19y 169d – Chris Gayle needed 19 years and 169 days from his debut to complete 10000 ODI runs; the longest span needed by any player. Brian Lara was 16 years and 37 days into his ODI career when he reached this elite club. Gayle is also the oldest to reach the mark at the age of 39 years and 159 days.


286 – In terms of innings for 10000 ODI runs, Gayle is the 7th slowest among the 14 players. However, he is the 5th fastest in terms of matches taken standing only after Virat Kohli (213), Sachin Tendulkar (266), Sourav Ganguly (272) and Ricky Ponting (272).


305 – Gayle is only the 2nd player in ODI history to hit 300 sixes. Shahid Afridi was the first player as he hit 351 maximums throughout his career. Gayle needed 282 innings for his 300th six while Afridi took 324 innings.


506 – Gayle is now the first player to hit 500 sixes in International cricket. He needed one six before this series to become the most prolific six-hitter in Internationals by surpassing Shahid Afridi’s tally of 476. The left-hander ended up scoring 29 maximums after going past Afridi thus far.


3103 – Chris Gayle completed 3000 runs across all three International formats against England. He is the 7th player from Windies with 3000 International runs against England. 696 of the 3103 runs of Gayle against England were scored in form of sixes.


4053 – Gayle became the first player in ODI format to aggregate 4000 runs in the Caribbean Islands. Overall, he is the 12th player to score 4000+ ODI runs in the home country.
