Indian captain Virat Kohli brought an end to his run drought in Test cricket scoring a fifty in the 2nd innings of the Galle Test against Sri Lanka. Kohli, who was the only player in the India XI to have not scored in the double digits in the first innings, walked out to bat after a rain break with the scoreboard reading 56/2.

Virat along with Abhinav Mukund put on a 133-run stand for the 3rd wicket and with that, the Indian lead extended to 498 as they scored 189/3 in their 2nd innings by end of the 3rd day’s play. Kohli remained unbeaten on 76 while Mukund got out on what proved to be the last ball of the day after scoring 81. The Indian skipper hit 5 fours in his innings of 76 batting out 116 balls.

Since his double century against Bangladesh in February, he had recorded scores of 38, 0, 13, 12, 15 6, and 3 prior to this innings which includes his 2nd worst 5 consecutive innings aggregate of 46 runs. During his half-century, Kohli joined the list of 7 men who scored 1000 and more runs as captain for India outside home.

Playing his 11th Test as captain outside home Virat completed 1000 runs in his 17th innings to become the fastest Indian to score 1000 runs as captain outside India in Test cricket. He broke Sachin Tendulkar’s record who took 19 innings for his 1000 runs. Sachin had to play 12 Test matches to get to the mark; one more than Kohli. Among the 7 players, MS Dhoni is the slowest to reach the mark as he completed 1000 runs as captain outside India in his 20th Test match and 34th innings.
