Stats: Sixes on the last ball of the 20th over in T20Is

Mahendra Singh Dhoni, who has the reputation of hitting sixes on the last ball of the ultimate overs and he lived up to it during the Asia Cup T20 opener against hosts Bangladesh as he struck a six on the very last ball of the Indian innings.

Incidentally, it was the 4th instance where MS Dhoni sent the ball over the boundary line on the final delivery of the 20th over in T20 Internationals. The stat becomes more special given the fact that no other player has managed to do it more than 2 times.

New Zealand’s Nathan McCullum, Sri Lanka’s Angelo Mathews, Bangladesh’s Mashrafe Mortaza and Afghanistan’s Shafiqullah are the only 3 players after MS Dhoni who have hit a six more than once on the final delivery of 20th over in the shortest format of the game.

In overall, 44 instances have been recorded where the final delivery of the 20th over in T20Is was hit for a six. 31 of those came during 1st innings while the remaining 13 instances were recorded during a team’s chase. Out of the 13 instance of six been hit on the final delivery of 20th over in chases, 4 times teams chasing hit last ball sixes and recorded a thrilling win.

Getting into further details – the bowlers who have conceded sixes on final delivery of 20th over in T20Is. Five bowlers have conceded on 2 different occasions so far. The 5 bowlers who belong to this elite list are – India’s Ashish Nehra, Netherlands’ Ahsan Malik, South Africa’s JJ van der Wath, Afghanistan’s Mohammad Nabi and Scotland’s SM Sharif.

The first ever instance of a six being hit on the final delivery of the 20th over in T20Is was by Brett Lee against Makhaya Ntini during a T20I game at Johannesburg in February, 2006.
