Stats: Usman Khawaja scores 141 in the 4th innings of the Dubai Test match
Khawaja bettered his first-innings performance in the big chase.
Usman Khawaja’s selection in Asia was highly criticized given his poor record in this part of the World in Test cricket. The left-hander aggregated only 117 runs in the nine innings in Asia at an average of 14.63 with the best score of 26 before the series in UAE. Usman Khawaja began the series on a high, top-scoring in the first innings with 85 and shared a 142-run opening stand with the debutant Aaron Finch. A collapse after their dismissals put Pakistan back in the driver seat.
Khawaja bettered his first-innings performance in the big chase as he put on three big partnerships to help the Aussies draw the game. The opening batsman put on 87 with Finch and then a 132-run partnership for the 4th wicket with another debutant Travis Head. His partnership with Tim Paine was the biggest one for the Aussies as that took them close to saving the game. Khawaja was finally dismissed after scoring 141 facing 302 deliveries with 11 fours.
Highest individual scores in 4th innings of a Test in Asia:
In this process, Usman Khawaja recorded the 6th highest individual score in the 4th innings of a Test match in Asia. His 141-run knock is also the highest by a non-Asian player in the 4th innings in an Asia Test. The record was on the name of New Zealand’s Daniel Vettori who scored 140 against Sri Lanka in the 2009 Colombo Test. The Kiwis were bowled out for 397 chasing 494 in that game against the hosts. Ricky Ponting’s unbeaten 118 in a successful chase in 2006 against Bangladesh stands third in the list.
Khawaja’s 141 is also the highest by any player in the 4th innings of a Test match in UAE. He thus surpassed Younis Khan’s unbeaten 131 also coming in Dubai in the 2010 Test against South Africa. Khawaja faced 302 balls in this innings which makes him only the 5th Australian to bat as many as 300+ balls in the 4th innings of a Test match. He is also the first Australian to face as many deliveries in the 4th innings of a Test since Mark Waugh’s unbeaten 305-ball 115 against South Africa in the 1988 Adelaide Test.
