Young Indian all-rounder Washington Sundar is showing great signs for India in Test cricket right from his debut in Australia. Sundar notched up his second Test half-century in the first Test match against England being played at Chepauk. He rescued India from a difficult situation as they were once struggling at 225/6.

Sundar added 80 runs for the seventh wicket with Ravichandran Ashwin and played brilliant innings of 85* runs off 138 balls. His inning included 12 fours and 2 sixes as well. India were bowled out for 337 runs, and conceded a lead of 241 runs in the first innings. With his superb innings, Washington Sundar added himself to some elite list of cricketers.

Let’s look at some of the milestones created by Washington Sundar with his innings

Sundar became the 8th Indian player to register a 50+ score in debut innings at home and away. He played a vital inning of 64 runs against Australia in his debut Test at Brisbane. The other seven Indian cricketers who have achieved this feat include Rusi Modi, Surinder Amarnath, Arun Lal, Sourav Ganguly, Suresh Raina, Hardik Pandya, Mayank Agarwal.

Washington Sundar is now second on the list of Indian players to score the most runs in the first three innings of their career. He has scored a total of 169 runs in his Test career till now which include two scores of 50 and above. Rahul Dravid holds the record for scoring the most runs in the first three innings for an Indian player at No. 7. Dravid made his debut against England in 1996, and he had scored 179 runs in his first three innings playing at No.7.

Washington Sundar registered the fourth-highest score by an Indian at Chepauk playing at No. 7. Indian legend Polly Umrigar is on the top of the list who played an innings of 130* runs in Chennai against England in the year 1952.

Sundar has shown great composure as a batsman and has taken responsibility in difficult situations in both his Tests. He was drafted into the Indian Test side as a replacement player, though he went just as a net bowler with the touring Indian team. India needed him to step up in absence of their main all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja who injured himself during the Sydney Test, and he has proven his worth to a great extent so far now.
